World Liberty Financial, the decentralized finance (DeFi) firm launched by the Trump family in 2024, is moving closer to opening its doors to the public. The company has put forward a governance proposal that, if approved, would make its WLFI token transferable for the first time.
The proposal, now up for a community vote, would pave the way for WLFI trading on peer-to-peer and secondary markets, allow early supporters to tap into some liquidity, and kick off a more robust system of token-based governance.
Notably, founders and insiders including Trump family members, who collectively own around 60% of the WLFI token supply would remain under extended lock-up periods. That’s meant to avoid any large insider sell-offs that could spook the market.
The firm announced the proposal on Friday, July 4, with patriotic flair:
“On this Independence Day, we’re making history. The proposal to make $WLFI tradable is now live. Crypto is coming home and there’s no better day to let freedom ring. Happy 4th of July from your friends at WLFI and from the new crypto capital of the world.”
The move represents a significant milestone for the Trump-backed project, which has grown into a meaningful financial asset for the former president. WLFI’s team hopes that unlocking trading and governance will fuel broader community ownership and participation in shaping the protocol’s future.
Under the new governance framework, WLFI holders would be able to vote on key issues like token emissions, ecosystem incentives, and how the project’s treasury is managed.
“This would mark a major milestone in the development of the World Liberty Financial ecosystem and opens the door for broader community participation, access, and protocol development,” the proposal reads.
According to the team, they’ve timed the proposal to match progress in product development, new ecosystem partnerships, and rising brand awareness. They also say there’s been strong demand from community members and partners who want WLFI to become tradable.
Early supporters who bought WLFI tokens would get partial liquidity once trading begins, while the rest of their holdings would unlock gradually according to release schedules determined by the community.
The firm says its phased approach is designed to avoid the pitfalls of many crypto token launches, where insiders can quickly cash out, sometimes crashing the market. Instead, World Liberty Financial aims to balance protecting its ecosystem with offering early community members access to trading.
