XRP delivered one of its strongest performances in years during August 2026, but price momentum may only be part of the story.
The token gained 37% during the month, making August its best-performing month of 2026 and its third-strongest August on record. At the same time, spot XRP exchange-traded funds attracted record inflows, Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin passed a major milestone on the XRP Ledger, and an important network upgrade moved closer to activation.
Together, these developments suggest the XRP story is beginning to extend beyond price speculation and regulatory headlines.
The next major event could arrive on Sept. 11, when the fixCleanup3_3_0 amendment may activate on the XRP Ledger if validator support remains above the required threshold.
The upgrade is designed to improve the stability of several important financial components, including Automated Market Makers, Single Asset Vaults and the Lending Protocol.
For XRP investors, the question is whether August’s rally was simply another burst of market enthusiasm or the beginning of a broader repricing of the XRP Ledger’s growing institutional infrastructure.
XRP Surges 37% in August
August did not begin particularly well for XRP.
During the first two weeks of the month, the token dropped 6.8% and touched a yearly low of $0.9874 on Aug. 15.
The decline occurred alongside a broader risk-off environment affecting the crypto market.
Momentum changed dramatically beginning Aug. 18.
Within less than a week, XRP climbed from around $1 to approximately $1.69 before eventually pulling back toward the $1.35 to $1.50 range as traders locked in profits.
Despite the pullback, XRP finished August with a 37% monthly gain.
That made it the third-best August in XRP’s history, behind the 58.9% gain recorded in 2021 and the 45.2% increase seen in 2017.
Several factors contributed to the reversal.
Improving liquidity expectations helped risk assets recover, while regulatory developments in Washington increased optimism around XRP’s potential treatment as a digital commodity.
Large XRP holders were also moving substantial amounts of XRP away from exchanges, although subsequent data suggested whale positioning was more complicated than straightforward accumulation.
XRP ETF Inflows Hit a Record
One of the most important developments in August came from spot XRP ETFs.
During the week ending Aug. 28, seven U.S.-listed spot XRP ETFs attracted approximately $110.49 million in net inflows.
That represented their strongest weekly inflow of 2026 and significantly exceeded the previous record of $60.5 million set in May.
Cumulative net inflows subsequently climbed beyond $1.66 billion.
Total net assets across the funds reached approximately $1.44 billion, while weekly trading volume rose to $363.03 million.
For the full month, XRP ETFs generated around $723 million in combined trading volume, setting a new monthly record.
What makes these flows particularly interesting is when they occurred.
XRP was not continuously rising while investors were buying the ETFs.
Around Aug. 29, XRP traded near $1.38 after declining over the previous week. ETF investors therefore continued allocating capital even as XRP’s market price weakened.
This type of behavior could indicate that at least some investors were building longer-term exposure instead of simply chasing short-term price momentum.
Institutional Interest in XRP Continues to Grow
The activity surrounding individual XRP ETFs provides another sign of growing interest.
Bitwise’s XRP ETF reportedly generated approximately $125 million in single-day trading volume on Aug. 20, exceeding its previous record by 42%.
The article also notes significant XRP ETF exposure disclosed by Goldman Sachs.
This does not prove that institutional investors expect XRP to rise immediately. However, continued ETF demand during periods of price weakness may indicate that some allocators are taking a longer-term view.
Regulatory clarity is one possible explanation.
If XRP receives clearer commodity treatment through U.S. legislation or CFTC rulemaking, it could become accessible to a broader range of institutional investment products.
But regulatory developments may not be the only reason.
Changes occurring directly on the XRP Ledger could be becoming increasingly important.
RLUSD Crosses $1 Billion on the XRP Ledger
Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin reached a significant milestone during August.
On Aug. 28, circulating RLUSD supply on the XRP Ledger surpassed $1.02 billion.
According to the article, RLUSD represented approximately 82% of the XRP Ledger’s stablecoin market at that point.
Across all supported networks, total RLUSD supply reached approximately $2.08 billion.
Its growth on XRPL has been particularly rapid.
At the end of the first quarter of 2026, RLUSD supply on the ledger stood at approximately $190 million.
By the end of Q2, it had climbed to $676.9 million, representing growth of roughly 257% in a single quarter.
Ripple then minted more than $540 million of RLUSD on XRPL during the following 30 days.
RLUSD Is Targeting Institutional Settlement
RLUSD’s significance comes from more than its circulating supply.
Ripple has positioned the stablecoin primarily as a compliance-focused settlement instrument rather than a product designed exclusively for retail crypto trading.
According to the source article, Japan’s Financial Services Agency approved RLUSD as an electronic payment instrument under the country’s Payment Services Act in June, with distribution through SBI VC Trade.
Ripple also received preliminary MiCA authorization in Luxembourg, potentially expanding its access to the European Economic Area.
Meanwhile, activity on XRPL has continued to grow.
The XRP Ledger reportedly settled approximately $159.9 billion during the first half of 2026.
RLUSD accounted for roughly $9 billion in transfer volume and around 90% of stablecoin volume on the ledger.
This strengthens the argument that XRPL is increasingly being used as financial settlement infrastructure rather than simply functioning as the blockchain behind XRP.
XRP Ledger Upgrade Could Activate Sept. 11
The next major development is the fixCleanup3_3_0 amendment.
As of Aug. 28, the amendment had reached 82.86% validator consensus, with 29 of 35 trusted validators supporting it.
XRPL amendments require at least 80% support for a continuous activation period.
If that support remains intact, fixCleanup3_3_0 could activate on mainnet on Sept. 11.
Unlike a major feature release, this amendment primarily focuses on stability.
It introduces bug fixes and improvements affecting three important areas of XRPL’s financial infrastructure: Automated Market Makers, Single Asset Vaults and the Lending Protocol.
These changes may sound less exciting than launching entirely new features, but they could be especially important for institutional adoption.
AMM Fixes Target Real Financial Risks
The amendment addresses several technical issues involving XRPL’s Automated Market Makers.
Among other improvements, it aims to correct precision problems involving deposits, withdrawals and clawbacks.
It also addresses an issue that could allow an AMM to be removed through an unauthorized transaction type.
Another fix targets a divide-by-zero error affecting a particular AMM withdrawal calculation.
Liquidity accounting within order-book calculations is also being improved.
These technical problems matter because even relatively small rounding or calculation errors can create unacceptable risks when financial institutions are managing significant amounts of capital.
For retail users, minor technical edge cases may occasionally be inconvenient.
For institutions deploying millions of dollars into liquidity pools, vaults or lending infrastructure, those same edge cases can become serious operational risks.
Vault and Lending Infrastructure Is Also Being Strengthened
The upgrade also introduces fixes affecting Single Asset Vaults and XRPL’s Lending Protocol.
Precision and rounding improvements are intended to prevent failed transactions from incorrectly modifying Permissioned Domains.
Freeze and deep-freeze checks are also being standardized for transactions involving pseudo accounts.
Other fixes address hybrid offers disappearing from permissioned order books and invalid actions involving pseudo accounts.
Taken together, these improvements could make XRPL’s native financial infrastructure more reliable for larger users.
Rather than introducing another experimental feature, fixCleanup3_3_0 is focused on making existing financial primitives safer and more predictable.
XRPL Is Building an Institutional DeFi Model
The XRP Ledger appears to be pursuing a different DeFi strategy from networks primarily targeting retail traders.
Its emerging model combines financial primitives with compliance controls designed for institutions such as banks, funds and corporate treasury operations.
This distinction becomes clearer when looking at XRPL’s EVM sidechain.
The article reports that the XRPL EVM sidechain held only about $25,741 in total value locked as of July 14.
That is extremely small compared with major DeFi ecosystems.
But the weak performance of the EVM sidechain may indicate that Ethereum-style decentralized applications are not where XRPL’s strongest demand exists.
Instead, the native ledger is seeing growth in areas such as stablecoin settlement and tokenized real-world assets.
Tokenized Assets on XRPL Reach $4.34 Billion
Tokenized real-world assets provide one of the strongest examples.
According to the article, RWA value on the XRP Ledger increased from approximately $73 million in January 2025 to around $4.34 billion by August 2026.
That represents nearly 60-fold growth in less than two years.
XRPL reportedly added approximately $1.9 billion in RWA inflows during the most recent 90-day period.
The ledger has also surpassed 5 billion lifetime transactions.
If fixCleanup3_3_0 successfully improves XRPL’s financial primitives, the network could be better positioned to support institutional lending, tokenized assets, liquidity pools and stablecoin settlement.
The Bear Case for XRP Remains Significant
Despite the bullish developments, several risks remain.
One major concern is value capture.
Although XRPL reportedly settled $159.9 billion during the first half of 2026, it generated only around $1.18 million in fees.
That represented an 81.6% decline from approximately $6.43 million during the same period in 2025.
Only a portion of those fees directly benefits XRP holders through token burning.
The network may therefore process substantial financial volume without necessarily transferring proportional economic value to XRP itself.
XRP Supply Dilution Remains a Concern
Ripple’s escrow releases create another potential headwind.
The article estimates XRP’s annual supply dilution at approximately 5.5%.
On Aug. 1, Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP from escrow, worth roughly $1.08 billion at the time.
A significant portion of these tokens typically returns to escrow, but regular unlocks still create uncertainty around future circulating supply.
For long-term investors, continued network adoption therefore needs to be considered alongside potential supply expansion.
XRPL’s EVM Sidechain Is Still Struggling
The weak performance of XRPL’s EVM sidechain represents another risk.
After roughly a year of operation, the sidechain’s reported TVL remained extremely low.
That raises questions about XRPL’s ability to compete for developers building the type of open DeFi applications that have driven growth on Ethereum, Solana and other smart-contract ecosystems.
However, XRPL may not need to replicate Ethereum’s strategy to succeed.
Its strongest opportunity may instead lie in native financial infrastructure designed specifically around institutional settlement, tokenized assets and compliance.
Validator Governance Could Become Important
The fixCleanup3_3_0 vote also highlights XRPL’s governance structure.
The amendment had support from 29 of 35 trusted validators, equivalent to 82.86%.
That is above the 80% activation threshold, but the margin is relatively narrow.
If enough validators change their votes before the activation window completes, support could fall below the required threshold and reset the process.
Ripple itself voted in favor of the amendment.
That increases confidence in its activation but also highlights continuing debate around Ripple’s influence over XRPL governance.
The network relies on a relatively small trusted validator set rather than a completely permissionless governance structure.
For decentralized-technology advocates, that can raise centralization concerns.
For banks and other regulated institutions, however, governance involving identifiable and accountable participants may be more attractive than fully anonymous decision-making.
Why the August XRP Rally Could Be Different
XRP has experienced powerful rallies before.
Many of those moves were driven primarily by one major catalyst.
The November 2024 rally, for example, was heavily connected to regulatory developments.
ETF-related optimism later created another burst of enthusiasm.
August 2026 may be different because several developments are occurring simultaneously.
XRP gained 37%.
Spot XRP ETFs attracted record weekly inflows.
RLUSD surpassed $1 billion on XRPL.
Tokenized assets reached approximately $4.34 billion.
And the XRP Ledger moved closer to activating an upgrade designed to strengthen its native DeFi infrastructure.
None of these developments alone guarantees that XRP will continue rising.
Together, however, they create a broader fundamental case than price momentum alone.
What XRP Investors Should Watch Next
The first major milestone is the fixCleanup3_3_0 validator vote.
If support remains above 80%, the amendment could activate on Sept. 11 and strengthen several of XRPL’s core financial components.
ETF flows will also be important.
Continued weekly inflows during periods of XRP price weakness would provide stronger evidence that investors are accumulating exposure rather than simply chasing rallies.
RLUSD supply represents another key metric.
After crossing $1 billion on XRPL, further growth toward $1.5 billion could indicate increasing demand for stablecoin-based institutional settlement.
Regulatory developments in the United States remain another potential catalyst, particularly any progress toward formally defining XRP’s status within the country’s crypto market structure.
Finally, Ripple’s Swell 2026 conference, scheduled for Oct. 27-29, could become an important venue for new institutional partnerships and XRPL ecosystem announcements.
XRP Enters September With More Than Price Momentum
XRP’s 37% August rally attracted attention, but the developments underneath the price may ultimately prove more important.
Record ETF activity suggests growing investor interest. RLUSD’s rapid expansion shows increasing stablecoin usage on the XRP Ledger. Tokenized real-world assets are growing rapidly, and XRPL’s next amendment is focused on making its financial infrastructure more reliable.
At the same time, important risks remain.
XRP continues to face supply dilution, XRPL generates relatively little fee revenue compared with the volume it processes, the EVM sidechain has struggled to attract DeFi liquidity, and questions remain around validator concentration.
The Sept. 11 upgrade could therefore become an important test.
If it activates successfully and institutional activity continues expanding, August’s rally may eventually be viewed as more than another speculative XRP move.
It could mark the point when investors began paying closer attention to what was happening underneath the XRP Ledger.
