Ethereum continues to trade below the key $2,000 resistance level despite steady institutional buying through spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). While ETH has recovered strongly from its June lows, renewed concerns over inflation, higher oil prices, and interest rate expectations are limiting the cryptocurrency’s upside momentum.
Adding to the cautious sentiment is the upcoming closure of crypto exchange BitMEX, which could temporarily affect derivatives market liquidity as traders shift positions to other platforms.
Ethereum remains stuck below key resistance
Ethereum was trading near $1,927 after reaching an intraday high of $1,941.
Although the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency has gained more than 27% since falling to around $1,514 in June, buyers have repeatedly failed to break through resistance between $1,941 and $1,955.
Without a decisive move above that range, the psychological $2,000 level remains out of reach.
Rising oil prices revive inflation concerns
One of the biggest obstacles facing Ethereum is the broader macroeconomic environment.
Oil prices have climbed for five consecutive sessions as tensions in the Middle East raised concerns over global energy supplies. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude has moved above $90 per barrel, increasing fears that inflation could remain elevated.
Higher energy costs may force the U.S. Federal Reserve to maintain tighter monetary policy for longer, reducing demand for higher-risk assets like cryptocurrencies.
Rate hike expectations are increasing
Investors have already begun adjusting their expectations for future interest rate decisions.
Market data now shows a higher probability of another Federal Reserve rate hike later this year, while Treasury yields continue to climb.
Higher interest rates generally reduce appetite for speculative investments, making it more difficult for cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum to sustain strong rallies.
Weakness in technology stocks adds pressure
Ethereum is also facing indirect pressure from the technology sector.
Investor sentiment weakened after Alphabet increased its capital spending forecast, raising concerns about profitability and future cash flow.
As technology shares declined, risk appetite across financial markets softened, creating another headwind for digital assets that often move alongside growth-focused investments.
ETF inflows continue supporting Ethereum
Despite the challenging macro environment, institutional demand remains one of Ethereum’s biggest strengths.
U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs attracted approximately $72.6 million in net inflows during the latest trading session.
BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust accounted for more than $53 million of those inflows, highlighting continued interest from institutional investors.
These steady capital inflows have helped Ethereum maintain support above the $1,900 level despite broader market uncertainty.
BitMEX shutdown creates temporary uncertainty
Crypto derivatives exchange BitMEX recently announced it will shut down operations on September 23 following a strategic review by its parent company.
Customers have been instructed to close positions and withdraw assets before the exchange ceases operations.
Although larger exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, and OKX are expected to absorb much of the trading activity, the transition could temporarily affect market liquidity and leverage across Ethereum’s futures market.
Technical outlook remains cautiously bullish
From a technical perspective, Ethereum continues to trade above its longer-term support levels.
The Supertrend indicator remains bullish, while Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) continues to show that buying activity is still exceeding selling pressure overall.
However, Ethereum must close above $1,955 to confirm a breakout and open the door toward $2,000 and potentially $2,030.
Momentum is beginning to slow
Short-term momentum indicators have weakened during the latest rally.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has moved lower from recent highs, while the MACD indicator has produced a bearish crossover.
Although neither indicator confirms a trend reversal, both suggest buyers are losing momentum as Ethereum approaches major resistance.
Important price levels to watch
Several key technical levels will likely determine Ethereum’s next move.
If buyers manage to push above $1,955, the next upside targets include:
- $2,000
- $2,030
- $2,179
On the downside, immediate support remains around $1,860.
A break below that level could expose ETH to additional declines toward:
- $1,786
- $1,745
- $1,682
Holding above these support levels would help preserve the current recovery structure.
Outlook
Ethereum continues to benefit from steady institutional buying, particularly through spot ETFs, which has helped keep prices above critical support despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop.
However, rising oil prices, growing expectations of future interest rate hikes, and weakening momentum near resistance are making it difficult for bulls to regain control.
For now, $1,955 remains the key breakout level. Until Ethereum clears that resistance with strong trading volume, the market may continue moving within its current range while investors closely monitor inflation, Federal Reserve policy, and broader financial market conditions.
