Michael Saylor’s Strategy has joined forces with some of the biggest names in finance and cryptocurrency to strengthen Bitcoin’s long-term security.
The company has announced the formation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, a new industry coalition that will commit $15 million over the next three years to support Bitcoin security research. The consortium’s first priority is preparing the network for the potential risks posed by future quantum computing technology.
Although experts believe practical quantum attacks are still years away, industry leaders say the time to prepare is now.
Major financial firms unite behind Bitcoin
Strategy is not tackling the challenge alone.
The founding members of the Bitcoin Security Consortium include:

- Coinbase
- Fidelity Digital Assets
- ARK Invest
- Anchorage Digital
- Galaxy Digital
- Block
- Blockstream
Together, these organizations represent some of the largest participants in the institutional Bitcoin ecosystem, spanning exchange-traded funds (ETFs), custody services, infrastructure development, and blockchain technology.
Their collaboration reflects growing recognition that protecting Bitcoin’s security requires industry-wide cooperation.
How the consortium will operate
Rather than creating a single centralized fund, each member will independently allocate its portion of the $15 million commitment.
That means participating companies can choose which developers, researchers, and security organizations they wish to support while coordinating broader research efforts through the consortium.
This decentralized funding model allows members to back different initiatives without concentrating decision-making in one organization.
Brink’s Mike Schmidt to coordinate the effort
The consortium’s day-to-day operations will be coordinated by Mike Schmidt, Executive Director of Bitcoin-focused nonprofit Brink.
Schmidt emphasized that he will serve as a volunteer without compensation while continuing to operate Brink independently from the participating companies.
He also stressed that the consortium will not influence Bitcoin’s governance or protocol decisions.
Instead, developers will continue using Bitcoin’s existing open-source review process, while consortium members simply provide financial support for security research.
Quantum computing becomes the first priority
The consortium’s initial focus will be preparing Bitcoin for the emergence of quantum computing.
Current quantum computers are not powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s cryptography.
However, researchers believe future machines could eventually become capable of compromising the elliptic curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin wallets.
Because updating Bitcoin’s security infrastructure could take many years, many experts argue that preparation should begin long before the technology becomes a practical threat.
Galaxy Digital has already launched its own initiative
Even before joining the consortium, Galaxy Digital had announced a separate $5 million Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative.
That program focuses on supporting research into:
- Quantum-resistant cryptographic signatures
- Wallet migration tools
- Independent security audits
- New protection mechanisms for Bitcoin users
Combined with Strategy’s consortium, more than $20 million has now been committed toward preparing Bitcoin for future quantum risks.
Although the initiatives remain separate, both share the same long-term objective of strengthening Bitcoin’s resilience.
Why quantum computing matters
Bitcoin’s security relies on cryptographic algorithms that are currently considered extremely secure.
The concern is that sufficiently advanced quantum computers could eventually solve complex mathematical problems far faster than today’s computers, potentially exposing older Bitcoin addresses whose public keys are already visible on the blockchain.
Research cited by Galaxy Digital estimates that approximately 6.9 million BTC could eventually become vulnerable if such technology becomes available.
At current market prices, those holdings would be worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
Dormant wallets face unique challenges
One of the biggest concerns involves lost or inactive Bitcoin wallets.
If stronger cryptographic protections are introduced in the future, active users could transfer their holdings into upgraded wallets.
However, coins stored in abandoned wallets would remain permanently exposed because their owners would be unable to move them.
That challenge makes early planning even more important, as developers will need migration tools that can protect as much of Bitcoin’s circulating supply as possible.
Investors are beginning to price in the risk
The possibility of quantum computing has also started influencing market discussions.
Some analysts believe investor concerns over future quantum threats have already created a modest “quantum discount” in Bitcoin’s valuation.
However, prediction markets currently view the near-term risk as relatively low.
Market participants generally believe there is only a limited chance that quantum computers will become capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography within the next few years.
A proactive approach to Bitcoin’s future
While quantum computing does not currently pose an immediate danger to Bitcoin, the industry’s largest institutions are choosing to prepare well in advance.
By bringing together leading ETF issuers, custodians, infrastructure providers, and security researchers, the Bitcoin Security Consortium aims to ensure the world’s largest cryptocurrency remains secure even as computing technology continues to evolve.
