Israeli authorities have indicted an Israel Defense Forces reservist and a civilian for allegedly using classified military intelligence to place bets on the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket.
The case, now formally filed in the Tel Aviv District Court, has sparked national security concerns over how sensitive military information could be exploited through blockchain-based betting platforms.
Allegations of insider betting
According to Israeli media reports, prosecutors allege the reservist accessed confidential operational intelligence through his role in the military and shared that information with a civilian associate.
The civilian allegedly used that information to place wagers on Polymarket tied to potential Israeli military actions.
The indictment was submitted by the State Attorney’s Office cyber division following a joint investigation conducted by Israeli police, the Shin Bet internal security agency, and the Defense Ministry’s Arazim investigations unit.
Authorities have charged the two individuals with serious security-related offenses, bribery, and obstruction of justice. Officials emphasized that neither defendant held a senior defense position.
How Polymarket works
Polymarket operates as a blockchain-based prediction market where users can trade “yes” or “no” outcome contracts on real-world events including politics, economics, and geopolitical developments.
Unlike traditional betting platforms, transactions on Polymarket are executed through crypto wallets, allowing users to participate pseudonymously. While activity is publicly recorded on-chain, linking wallets to real-world identities can be challenging without investigative tools.
That structure has raised regulatory and security concerns in several jurisdictions, particularly when markets involve sensitive geopolitical topics.
Suspiciously accurate wagers
The investigation reportedly began after authorities noticed unusually precise wagers related to Israeli military actions, including events tied to operations in Iran in June 2025.
Local media reported that one anonymous account made highly accurate predictions about the timing and nature of strikes resulting in significant profits.
That anomaly triggered scrutiny and ultimately led to the indictment.
Broader security concerns
Israeli authorities have stressed that using classified military intelligence for financial gain represents a serious breach of national security.
Beyond the alleged criminal conduct, the case highlights a broader concern: decentralized prediction markets can potentially be used to monetize insider information in ways that are difficult to detect in real time.
As blockchain-based betting platforms grow in popularity, regulators and security agencies may face increasing challenges balancing financial innovation with operational secrecy and national defense interests.
The case is expected to move forward in Israeli courts in the coming months.
