Privacy on public blockchains has long been one of crypto’s biggest contradictions. Transactions are transparent by design, yet that openness often exposes users and institutions to unwanted tracking, front-running, and data analysis. Payy is now stepping into that gap with a new Ethereum layer 2 network designed to make on-chain activity private by default.
The company announced that its privacy-enabled layer 2 can be used directly with MetaMask, allowing users to send ERC-20 tokens without revealing transaction details on the public blockchain. Unlike previous privacy tools, Payy claims its approach requires no smart-contract changes and works seamlessly with existing wallets.
According to Payy, the goal is simple: make privacy “invisible.” Users don’t need to learn new workflows, bridge assets across unfamiliar networks, or sacrifice compatibility with decentralized applications. Transactions are automatically routed through private ERC-20 pools, masking the sender, receiver, and transaction paths that would normally be visible on-chain.
When users interact with decentralized finance protocols, funds are withdrawn to freshly generated addresses, helping prevent address tracking over time. Sensitive transaction data is stored in off-chain privacy vaults, while users retain control over how much privacy or compliance they want when interacting with specific applications.
Payy says its network is built to support all ERC-20 tokens, with a particular focus on stablecoins. The project believes private stablecoin usage is essential if crypto payments are ever going to scale beyond retail users and into mainstream finance.
The company is targeting two core audiences. The first is institutions and fintech firms that want to move capital on-chain without exposing their trading behavior or treasury flows. The second is everyday crypto users who value privacy but don’t want to juggle multiple wallets or specialized tools just to protect their activity.
To bootstrap the network, Payy plans to onboard around 100,000 existing users from its wallet ecosystem and is working with large stablecoin partners that it says will be announced soon.
Payy CEO Sid Gandhi framed the launch as a turning point for blockchain adoption. In his view, privacy is no longer a niche feature but a requirement for serious financial use. Without it, on-chain payments risk becoming permanent data leaks rather than viable alternatives to traditional systems.
The timing of the launch is notable. Interest in privacy-preserving tools has returned after years of regulatory pressure. Tokens such as Monero and Zcash have seen renewed attention, while Ethereum developers continue exploring wallet-level privacy solutions.
The Ethereum Foundation previously outlined a privacy roadmap aimed at ensuring Ethereum does not become what it described as “the backbone of global surveillance.” Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has also publicly supported privacy-focused initiatives, including funding for encrypted messaging and private transaction research.
Payy’s approach reflects a broader shift in how the industry thinks about privacy. Rather than standalone privacy coins or complex opt-in tools, the focus is moving toward infrastructure-level solutions that blend compliance, usability, and confidentiality.
If successful, Payy’s layer 2 could offer a middle ground where users keep the transparency benefits of Ethereum while shielding sensitive financial activity from public scrutiny. As crypto pushes toward real-world payments and institutional adoption, that balance may prove critical.
