As markets continue to reel from heavy volatility, Cathie Wood is once again leaning into her high-conviction strategy: buying when others are pulling back.
On Feb. 2, Ark Invest purchased approximately $32.7 million worth of Robinhood shares, stepping in after the stock fell to a multi-month low amid a broader selloff in crypto-linked equities.
The purchase included 363,317 shares of Robinhood, spread across three Ark exchange-traded funds. The largest allocation went to the Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK), which added more than $21 million worth of shares. Additional buys were made through the Ark Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW) and the Ark Fintech Innovation ETF (ARKF).
Buying into weakness
Robinhood’s stock has been under pressure in recent weeks, mirroring the sharp downturn across both technology and cryptocurrency markets. The trading platform’s shares fell nearly 10% on Monday, weighed down by Bitcoin’s slide to a nine-month low and rising risk aversion across global markets.
Despite the weakness, Ark’s move suggests the firm views the selloff as an opportunity rather than a warning sign.
Robinhood is now one of the top holdings in Ark’s flagship ARKK fund, where it represents just under 4% of the portfolio. The stock also ranks among the largest positions in ARKW and ARKF, underscoring Ark’s continued confidence in Robinhood’s long-term role at the intersection of fintech, trading, and digital assets.
Ark increases exposure to crypto-linked stocks
The Robinhood purchase was not an isolated move. Ark Invest also added shares of several crypto-focused companies, including Circle, Bitmine, Bullish, and CoreWeave, as the firm increased exposure to digital-asset infrastructure during a period of market stress.
At the same time, Ark bought shares of its own spot Bitcoin ETF, ARKB, even as the fund experienced net outflows over the past week. The move aligns with the firm’s long-standing belief that periods of panic often create attractive entry points for disruptive technologies.
Market context remains fragile
Crypto-related stocks have struggled alongside digital assets themselves. Bitcoin fell sharply over the weekend, triggering widespread liquidations and pushing sentiment firmly into “extreme fear” territory.
Rising expectations of tighter U.S. monetary policy, geopolitical tensions, and a broad tech selloff have all combined to pressure risk assets, leaving crypto-exposed companies especially vulnerable.
Still, Ark Invest appears unfazed by the near-term turbulence. The firm has consistently argued that innovation-driven assets experience exaggerated drawdowns during market stress, often followed by outsized recoveries when conditions stabilize.
A familiar Ark strategy
Cathie Wood has long embraced a contrarian approach, adding to high-growth names during downturns rather than chasing momentum during rallies. The latest Robinhood purchase fits neatly into that pattern.
Whether the bet pays off will depend on how quickly crypto markets stabilize and whether retail trading activity rebounds in the months ahead. For now, Ark’s message is clear: volatility has not shaken its long-term conviction.
