X is rolling out a new onboarding feature called Starterpacks, aimed at helping crypto-curious users discover relevant accounts and conversations as engagement around Bitcoin and crypto continues to decline on the platform.
The feature, announced by Nikita Bier, will allow new users to automatically follow curated lists of accounts based on interests such as cryptocurrency, technology, and regional markets. Starterpacks will be organized by niche and country, making it easier for users to plug into local and global crypto discussions from day one.
In the crypto category, Starterpacks are expected to include accounts focused on memecoin trading, real-time market updates, and sentiment from active traders. A short demo video shared by Bier showed users selecting interests during onboarding and instantly following pre-selected account bundles.
The move comes amid growing frustration within the crypto community over declining visibility on the platform. According to Bitcoin cypherpunk Jameson Lopp, posts containing the word “Bitcoin” totaled around 96 million in 2025 — a 32% year-over-year decline. While the data does not reflect overall crypto engagement, it has fueled claims that crypto content is being throttled.
Bier pushed back against those accusations, arguing that the drop is driven by user behavior rather than algorithmic suppression. “Crypto Twitter is dying from suicide, not from the algorithm,” he wrote, a comment that sparked backlash from parts of the crypto community who believe visibility has been intentionally reduced.
The debate over centralized social platforms has also drawn commentary from Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent post, Buterin called for communication platforms that prioritize users’ long-term interests rather than short-term engagement metrics.
Buterin said he plans to return to decentralized social media platforms in 2026, though he acknowledged that many such projects have struggled. He argued that successful decentralized networks must be led by teams genuinely committed to solving social problems rather than optimizing for clicks and virality.
As X looks to revive discovery through Starterpacks, the rollout highlights a broader tension between centralized platforms seeking engagement and crypto communities increasingly interested in decentralized alternatives.
