Trove Markets has confirmed it will retain the majority of funds raised during its recent token sale, despite pivoting its perpetual decentralized exchange away from Hyperliquid just days before the token launch.
The decision has sparked significant backlash from contributors after the TROVE token collapsed by roughly 95% within minutes of its market debut, intensifying scrutiny around the project’s fundraising practices and fund management.
Trove initially raised capital through a public token sale marketed around building a perpetual DEX on Hyperliquid’s infrastructure. However, shortly before the token generation event, the team announced it would instead rebuild the platform on Solana, raising immediate concerns from participants over whether funds would still be used for their original purpose.
Company cites liquidity withdrawal as reason for pivot
In public statements, a Trove builder identified as Unwise said the pivot was triggered by the withdrawal of a key liquidity partner that had previously supported the Hyperliquid deployment with a sizable position. According to the team, losing this support made continued development on Hyperliquid unviable, forcing a strategic shift to Solana to preserve the product.
Trove said it would retain a substantial portion of the funds raised to continue development on the new chain, describing the move as essential to maintaining long-term platform viability.
The company acknowledged that its communication around the ICO and pivot caused confusion and damaged trust. It said partial refunds had already been issued to some participants, with additional automatic refunds planned. Remaining proceeds, Trove said, have been allocated to developer salaries, infrastructure costs, frontend and backend development, hiring a chief technology officer, advisory services, marketing, and other operational expenses.
Community backlash and on-chain scrutiny
Despite these explanations, critics questioned the decision to repurpose funds that were raised explicitly for Hyperliquid-based development. Some contributors called for full refunds and raised the possibility of legal action, citing concerns around transparency and investor protection.
On-chain analysts also flagged unusual presale activity. Blockchain data suggested a single entity appeared to control a significant portion of the TROVE supply across multiple wallets that were funded from the same exchange within narrow time windows. While analysts found no direct evidence linking these wallets to the Trove team, they noted the concentration pattern warranted further scrutiny.
The controversy adds to earlier complications during Trove’s January token sale. The company initially announced that the sale exceeded its target and committed to pro-rata refunds, before extending the sale by five days and then reversing that decision hours later, citing an internal error.
As scrutiny continues, the Trove situation has become a cautionary example of how late-stage strategic pivots and unclear fund disclosures can rapidly erode trust in early-stage crypto projects.
