The TROVE token suffered a dramatic collapse shortly after launch, plunging roughly 95% within minutes, after Trove Markets confirmed a last-minute shift away from its original infrastructure plan a move that quickly ignited backlash across the crypto community.
The controversy centers on Trove Markets, which raised funds through a public token sale marketed around building a perpetual decentralized exchange on Hyperliquid. Just days before the token generation event, the team announced it would instead rebuild the platform on Solana, catching many contributors off guard.
TROVE price collapses after abrupt pivot
Following the announcement, the TROVE token debuted under heavy selling pressure, rapidly shedding most of its value. The price crash fueled accusations that the project had changed course without sufficient transparency, leaving early supporters uncertain about how their funds were being used.
Trove confirmed that it would retain a significant portion of the token sale proceeds to continue development on Solana. While the team offered partial refunds to some participants, many contributors questioned why funds raised specifically for a Hyperliquid-based product were not fully returned after the pivot.
Team cites lost liquidity support
A Trove developer known publicly as Unwise attributed the shift to the sudden withdrawal of a major liquidity partner that had previously supported the Hyperliquid deployment with a sizable position. According to the team, the loss of this backing made it impractical to continue development on Hyperliquid, forcing the decision to rebuild on Solana to preserve the project’s long-term viability.
In public statements, Trove acknowledged that its handling of the token sale and communication around the pivot damaged trust. The company said it has already issued refunds to some contributors and plans to process additional automatic refunds where applicable.
Remaining funds, according to the team, have been allocated to developer salaries, frontend and backend infrastructure, leadership hires including a chief technology officer, advisory services, marketing, and operational expenses.
On-chain concerns and legal threats emerge
Despite these explanations, criticism has continued to mount. Some participants argued that the redirection of funds violated the original intent of the token sale and called for full refunds. Others raised the possibility of legal action.
Blockchain analysts also flagged unusual on-chain patterns following the launch. According to analysis shared publicly, a single entity appeared to control a meaningful portion of the TROVE supply across multiple wallets funded from the same exchange within short time windows. While no direct link to the Trove team was identified, analysts said the concentration warranted closer scrutiny, particularly in the context of presale activity.
ICO missteps add fuel to backlash
The fallout follows a turbulent initial coin offering process earlier in January. Trove initially stated that its sale had exceeded the target and promised pro-rata refunds. The company later announced a five-day extension, only to reverse the decision hours later, citing an internal error a sequence of events that further undermined confidence.
