The Pepe coin has kicked off the new year with surprising strength, jumping nearly 30% in a single day and snapping a long stretch of bearish momentum. After months of drifting lower, the frog-themed meme coin is suddenly back in the spotlight.
Pepe surged to an intraday high of $0.0000052 on Jan. 2 before cooling slightly around $0.0000051. At those levels, the token is now trading roughly 45% above its 2025 lows, signaling a potential trend reversal after a prolonged downturn.
What triggered the sudden rally?
The rally appears to have been sparked by a bold bullish call from James Wynn, a widely followed trader on Hyperliquid with nearly half a million followers on X.
Wynn predicted that Pepe’s market capitalization could climb to as high as $69 billion by the end of 2026. The call quickly gained traction across social media and trading circles, reigniting speculative interest in the meme coin.
His track record added credibility to the forecast. Wynn previously turned heads by predicting Pepe’s rise when its market cap was just $600,000, a move that reportedly earned him around $25 million during earlier rallies.
Social momentum and meme coin comparisons
In a series of posts, Wynn compared Pepe’s current setup to past meme-coin cycles. He pointed to Shiba Inu, which surged more than 11 times in a single month during a previous altcoin season, climbing from roughly $3.5 billion to over $41 billion in market cap.
He also referenced Dogecoin, which peaked near an $88 billion valuation at the height of meme-coin mania. According to Wynn, Pepe’s online engagement and community strength now rival or exceed those earlier examples.
“If SHIB can do $41 billion and DOGE can do $88 billion, PEPE can go much higher,” Wynn wrote, adding that $69 billion remains his personal target.
Market reaction was immediate
Following the prediction, buying pressure surged. Pepe’s market cap jumped from about $1.72 billion to nearly $2.2 billion within 24 hours as traders rushed in. At the time of writing, the market cap is holding around $2.15 billion.
If Wynn’s projection were ever realized, it would imply a potential upside of more than 30 times from current levels, though such outcomes remain highly speculative.
Technical signals turn bullish
Beyond social hype, technical indicators are also beginning to support the move. On the daily chart, Pepe has broken out of a descending parallel channel, a pattern that often precedes further upside after extended downtrends.
Momentum indicators are improving as well. The MACD has turned upward while remaining below the zero line, suggesting growing bullish pressure, and the RSI has formed a bullish divergence, another early reversal signal.
For now, traders are closely watching the $0.0000056 level, which aligns with the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement and previously acted as strong resistance in mid-2025. A clean break above that zone could open the door to $0.0000074, roughly 45% above current prices.
Why Pepe is moving now
After months of meme-coin fatigue, easing market fear and improving crypto sentiment in early 2026 have created room for speculative assets to breathe again. Pepe’s rally reflects a combination of renewed risk appetite, strong social engagement, and a credible bullish narrative.
Whether the move turns into a sustained uptrend or fades as hype cools will depend on broader market conditions, but for now, Pepe has clearly reclaimed traders’ attention.
