Bitcoin is once again at a critical crossroads. As Christmas approaches, BTC is trading around $88,000, but instead of building momentum, price action has stalled beneath a major technical barrier. With fading holiday optimism, weakening structure, and mixed on-chain signals, traders are debating whether Bitcoin is preparing for a rebound or something more concerning.
Bitcoin Breaks Long-Term Bull Channel
Bitcoin has now traded below its long-term bull market channel for six consecutive weeks, a structure that had held since early 2023. After the breakdown, BTC attempted to reclaim the channel three separate times, but each move was rejected.
This repeated failure has turned the lower boundary of the former channel into strong resistance, a classic technical behavior when long-term trends break. Current price action shows Bitcoin consolidating just beneath this level, setting the stage for a possible fourth test.
How BTC reacts here could determine whether the recent decline is simply a temporary deviation — or the start of a more extended downturn.
Echoes of the 2021 Rounded Top
Some analysts are drawing parallels between today’s structure and Bitcoin’s 2021 rounded top pattern. In both cases, price formed a gradual topping structure, broke down sharply, bounced in a corrective move, and then rolled over again near former support.
Notably, the same support zone being tested now also played a key role in the 2021 cycle. When it failed back then, Bitcoin entered a prolonged decline. While a move back toward previous highs remains technically possible, analysts caution that these levels have historically marked sentiment turning points, not sustained strength.
Bearish Pennant Risk Emerges
On higher timeframes, some traders have identified a potential bearish pennant formation on the weekly chart. If confirmed, this pattern could signal continuation to lower major support levels rather than a renewed push higher.
This doesn’t guarantee a breakdown, but it reinforces the idea that Bitcoin must reclaim resistance decisively to invalidate the bearish structure.
Hashrate Drop Adds a Contrarian Signal
VanEck recently highlighted a 4% drop in Bitcoin’s network hashrate, signaling reduced mining activity. Historically, hashrate declines have often occurred near market bottoms, making this a potential contrarian bullish signal.
However, analysts stress caution. Hashrate alone does not confirm reversals, and its significance depends heavily on how price behaves at current resistance. Without a strong reclaim, the signal remains incomplete.
Bitcoin and the Christmas Rally Narrative
The idea of a Christmas or “Santa rally” continues to circulate, but history paints a mixed picture.
Since 2013, Bitcoin has closed December higher only five times, while closing lower seven times. Although the average December return sits near +4%, that figure masks extreme volatility, with outcomes ranging from +47% gains to −35% losses.
Seasonality data shows December is not a month of gentle drift. Instead, it tends to deliver either sharp rallies or sharp drawdowns. Recent years also suggest the Santa rally effect is weakening, with the massive 2020 year-end surge heavily skewing long-term averages.
In short, relying on a Christmas rally as a trading edge has become increasingly unreliable.
Bitcoin Price Outlook: $100K or Deeper Pullback?
Bitcoin remains stuck between strong resistance near the former bull channel and uncertain support below. Bulls need a decisive reclaim of this level to revive the $100,000 narrative and shift momentum back in their favor.
Failure to do so keeps the risk tilted toward consolidation or further downside, especially if broader sentiment weakens.
For now, Bitcoin is not breaking down but it is also not confirming strength. The market is waiting, and the next decisive move will likely define how BTC enters 2026.
