Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison is expected to be released from federal custody on January 21, 2026, according to updated records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The revised release date comes nearly a month earlier than previously anticipated and reflects the significant cooperation Ellison provided to prosecutors in the high-profile FTX criminal case.
Ellison was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2024 for her role in the collapse of FTX, once one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges. Federal records indicate that she will have served less than half of her custodial sentence by the time of her release.
Early Release Follows Extensive Cooperation
The shortened custody period is largely attributed to Ellison’s extensive assistance in the government’s case against Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX. Ellison served as the prosecution’s key cooperating witness, offering detailed testimony that prosecutors said was central to securing Bankman-Fried’s conviction and subsequent 25-year federal prison sentence on multiple fraud charges.
In recognition of that cooperation, Ellison was transferred in October 2025 from prison to community confinement, a form of supervised release that can include placement in a halfway house or home confinement. She is currently overseen by a Residential Reentry Management office in New York City.
Long-Term Restrictions Remain in Place
While Ellison’s custodial sentence is nearing its end, her legal and professional limitations are far from over. On December 19, 2025, she formally agreed to a 10-year ban prohibiting her from serving as an officer or director of any public company or cryptocurrency exchange.
The restriction effectively sidelines her from regulated finance and the crypto industry through the mid-2030s, even after her release. In addition, Ellison will remain subject to post-release supervision under federal guidelines.
A Defining Case in the FTX Fallout
Ellison’s case has become one of the most prominent examples of cooperation-driven sentence reductions to emerge from the FTX collapse. The fallout from the exchange’s failure continues to shape regulatory debates, compliance standards, and enforcement strategies across the global cryptocurrency industry.
Her January 2026 release will close the custodial chapter of one of crypto’s most closely watched criminal cases — but its impact on regulation and trust in digital asset markets is likely to linger for years to come.
