Barclays has struck a cautious tone on the cryptocurrency sector, warning that 2026 could shape up as a slower, transitional year marked by weakening retail participation and falling spot trading volumes.
In its year-end research note, the bank said crypto exchanges and trading platforms may struggle to find near-term growth drivers as the speculative retail activity that powered previous bull cycles continues to fade.
Retail trading weakness weighs on exchanges
According to Barclays, retail-focused platforms such as Coinbase and Robinhood are under pressure as spot trading a key revenue source continues to decline. The bank noted that spot crypto volumes appear to be heading toward a down year in fiscal 2026, with no obvious catalyst on the horizon to reverse the trend.
In earlier market cycles, sharp volatility and strong price momentum encouraged heavy retail participation. That dynamic has weakened significantly, with fewer active traders and lower price swings reducing incentives for new users to enter spot markets.
Fewer catalysts expected in 2026
Barclays also highlighted the lack of major upcoming catalysts. In the past, events such as the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 and political developments tied to the U.S. election drove sharp spikes in trading activity. However, the bank said it sees few comparable events likely to energize markets through 2026.
While regulatory clarity in the United States could eventually support growth, Barclays cautioned that progress is likely to be slow. The bank pointed to the proposed CLARITY Act, which aims to define whether digital assets fall under securities or commodities regulation and clarify oversight between U.S. regulators. While helpful in the long run, any benefits are expected to emerge gradually rather than spark immediate trading demand.
Coinbase outlook trimmed
Coinbase featured prominently in the report, given its role as the largest U.S.-based crypto exchange. Barclays lowered its price target for Coinbase shares, citing shrinking spot volumes and rising operating costs.
The bank acknowledged Coinbase’s efforts to diversify revenue through derivatives trading, tokenized equities and acquisitions, but said these initiatives are unlikely to offset near-term weakness in spot trading during 2026.
Tokenization seen as long-term opportunity
Tokenization continues to attract attention from both crypto-native firms and traditional financial institutions. Barclays pointed to early initiatives from companies such as BlackRock and Robinhood, which have launched pilot programs tied to tokenized assets.
However, the bank stressed that tokenization remains in its early stages and is unlikely to make a meaningful impact on earnings next year. Instead, it sees the trend as a longer-term structural opportunity rather than a near-term growth driver.
A transitional phase for crypto
Despite a more supportive political backdrop for digital assets following recent U.S. elections, Barclays said much of the optimism appears already priced into markets. Any major legislative changes would still require approval and could face legal or regulatory hurdles before translating into real economic impact.
Overall, Barclays described 2026 as a transitional year for the crypto industry one focused on compliance, infrastructure investment and gradual evolution, rather than explosive growth driven by retail speculation.
