Markets know a big change is coming at the top of the U.S. Federal Reserve they just don’t know when.
Jerome Powell’s term as Fed chair ends in May 2026, and President Trump is already lining up a successor. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said there’s a “very good chance” Trump will announce his choice before Christmas, but the timing has already shifted more than once.
On Nov. 25, Bessent hinted an announcement was coming soon. Five days later, Trump said he’d made his pick. By Dec. 2, he told the New York Times that the reveal might slip to “early next year.”
In the meantime, crypto traders are hanging on every hint.
Why Crypto Cares About the Next Fed Chair
Bitcoin has a long track record of reacting to Fed policy. Historically:
- Rate hikes tend to pressure BTC and other risk assets.
- Rate cuts usually help by boosting liquidity and making borrowing cheaper.
Layer on top of that Trump’s openly pro-crypto stance, and the stakes feel even higher for digital asset markets.
In a 60 Minutes interview on Nov. 2, Trump put it bluntly:
“I only care about one thing will crypto be number one in America?”
He framed crypto as a winner-takes-most industry, where there’s “number one and you’re not gonna have a number two.” That kind of rhetoric has fueled hopes that his Fed pick could lean friendlier toward digital assets and looser monetary conditions.
For crypto bulls, a new Fed chair could signal:
- A shift toward more dovish policy (or at least less uncertainty)
- A leadership style more aligned with Trump’s pro-crypto narrative
But it’s still just that hope. Nothing is guaranteed.
The Short-Term Macro Setup
Before we even get to the next chair, markets are fixated on the Dec. 10 Fed meeting.
- A 25-basis-point rate cut is widely expected.
- The real drivers are likely to be:
- The Fed’s updated economic projections
- Jerome Powell’s press conference and tone
Analysts warn that even a rate cut could come with a “hawkish” message signaling that the easing cycle is nearing its end or that future cuts will be slower and more cautious. That kind of mixed signal could spark volatility across stocks, bonds, and crypto.
Growing disagreements inside the Fed, weaker forward guidance, and uncertainty about 2026 policy all add to the noise and to traders’ anxiety.
The Shortlist: Who Might Replace Powell?
Several names are now in the mix to lead the Fed after Powell:
- Kevin Hassett
- Director of the National Economic Council
- Former senior economic adviser in the White House
- Seen by some media outlets as relatively crypto-friendly
- Markets are trying to guess whether he would push for easier policy, stronger growth focus, or more openness to digital assets.
- Christopher Waller
- Current Fed Governor
- Known for a hawkish stance and an emphasis on fighting inflation
- Markets might view a Waller-led Fed as more cautious on rate cuts.
- Michelle Bowman
- Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve
- Brings regulatory and banking experience, with a focus on community banks and financial stability.
- Rick Rieder
- Senior executive at BlackRock
- Deep markets background, active commentator on rates, credit, and risk assets.
Each candidate would bring a different tone to monetary policy and by extension, a different backdrop for crypto. A more dovish or growth-focused chair could be seen as bullish for Bitcoin and altcoins, while a hawkish inflation fighter might tighten the screws.
What Comes Next for Crypto?
Right now, the market is juggling three moving parts:
- The December rate decision and Powell’s messaging
- The overall trajectory of the Fed’s easing cycle
- Trump’s looming Fed chair nomination and its policy implications
Even though 2025 has seen very friendly crypto regulations, Bitcoin is still trading in the red a reminder that regulation alone doesn’t drive price. Macro conditions, liquidity, and sentiment around the Fed matter just as much, if not more.
Crypto bulls are hoping that:
- The next Fed chair will be less hostile to risk assets, and
- Trump’s pro-crypto stance will trickle into friendlier monetary and regulatory conditions.
But until a nominee is announced and confirmed, markets are left reading between the lines and pricing every hint, leak, and headline into Bitcoin’s next move.
