Robinhood is preparing for one of its most significant international expansions yet. The company announced on Dec. 7 that it plans to acquire PT Buana Capital Sekuritas, a licensed Indonesian brokerage, and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, a regulated digital asset trading platform.
The move gives Robinhood immediate entry into one of Southeast Asia’s most active retail investment hubs, home to more than 19 million capital market investors and 17 million crypto users.
A Strategic Dual-License Entry
Patrick Chan, Robinhood’s Head of Asia, said Indonesia’s fast-growing trading culture aligns with the company’s mission to broaden access to financial markets. Pieter Tanuri, the majority owner of both entities, will remain onboard as a strategic advisor after the acquisition.
Once the deal closes, Robinhood plans to maintain Buana Capital’s existing brokerage operations while gradually expanding access to:
- U.S. equities
- Cryptocurrencies
- Tokenized assets
- Other global investment products
These services will eventually integrate with Robinhood’s international platform, giving Indonesian users streamlined access to global markets.
Both acquisitions are expected to close in the first half of 2026, pending approval from Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK).
Indonesia: A High-Growth Market with Huge Potential
Indonesia has become a major target for fintech and digital asset firms due to its:
- Large, young, mobile-first population
- Rapidly rising retail trading volumes
- Strong regulatory push for digital finance
By purchasing both a licensed brokerage and a registered crypto trader, Robinhood gains a dual regulatory advantage that could allow the company to scale quickly across both traditional and digital asset segments.
Following the announcement, Robinhood shares rose 1.2% in after-hours trading, with many users on X calling it a “major milestone” for broader global crypto access.
Part of Robinhood’s Wider Global and Crypto Strategy
The Indonesia expansion comes as Robinhood accelerates its product roadmap. The company’s custom Layer-2 network, built on Arbitrum, now supports:
- Over 900 tokenized U.S. stocks
- ETFs
- Commodities
all available for 24/7 trading.
The company also recently moved into prediction markets through a partnership with Kalshi, adding NFL and college football event contracts. The partnership fueled a rise in Robinhood’s stock price earlier in the month but also drew regulatory attention, including a cease-and-desist order from Connecticut for unlicensed sports betting.
Still, the product line remains popular: Robinhood reported over one million users trading event contracts in Q3.
With the Indonesia deal, Robinhood is reinforcing its ambition to become a global, multi-asset investment platform bridging traditional finance, tokenized assets, and next-generation trading experiences.
