The crypto market took a sharp downturn on Oct. 17 as fears of a deepening U.S.–China trade war and heavy ETF outflows shook investor confidence. The overall sentiment has now slipped into “extreme fear,” with major coins losing critical support levels.
The total crypto market cap dropped 2.7% to $3.7 trillion, while liquidations spiked 56% to $724 million in just 24 hours. Market momentum weakened further, with the global crypto RSI sitting at 39 a range commonly seen during market consolidation.
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index also fell six points to 22, signaling rapidly deteriorating sentiment across the market.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana Lose Key Support
At the time of writing:
- Bitcoin (BTC) is down 2.6% at $108,485
- Ethereum (ETH) has dropped 2.8% to $3,909
- Solana (SOL) slipped 5.2% to $185
- XRP also fell 3.4% to $2.35
The downturn followed renewed geopolitical tension. President Trump’s Oct. 10 announcement targeting Chinese tech exports sparked a new wave of uncertainty, and China’s retaliatory sanctions especially involving U.S. shipping reversed Monday’s brief market rebound.
ETF Outflows and Options Expiry Add Selling Pressure
Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $506 million in outflows on Oct. 16, while Ethereum ETFs recorded $103 million in withdrawals, per SoSoValue. After several weeks of strong inflows, appetite from institutions now appears to be cooling.
Adding to volatility, a large batch of derivatives is set to expire on Oct. 17:
- $4.73 billion in Bitcoin options
- $970 million in Ethereum options
According to Deribit, Bitcoin’s put/call ratio stands at 0.82 with a max pain price of $116,000, while Ethereum’s ratio is 0.81 with max pain at $4,100 levels that often act as short-term price magnets.
What Could Spark a Crypto Market Rebound?
Despite the pullback, analysts see several potential catalysts that could support a recovery:
- The market expects a 25 bps Federal Reserve rate cut at the Oct. 28–29 FOMC meeting. With inflation cooling and the labor market softening, Chair Jerome Powell hinted at further easing.
Historically, lower rates weigh on the dollar and drive liquidity into crypto. After the September rate cut, BTC jumped 15%. - A reduction in U.S.–China trade tensions could help lift investor sentiment. Any signs of progress in negotiations or easing Middle East tensions may fuel a relief rally, potentially pushing BTC toward $120,000.
- New altcoin ETF filings and anticipated SEC/CFTC regulatory decisions could unlock fresh institutional capital before year-end.
For now, the market remains fragile but several macro events over the next two weeks may determine whether Bitcoin can reclaim momentum above $115,000.
