Crypto exchange KuCoin has officially entered the Australian market with the opening of a regional headquarters in Sydney, marking its latest move to strengthen its global presence.
According to a Nov. 17 press release, the new office will serve as KuCoin’s primary operations hub in Australia as the exchange targets one of the world’s most closely regulated and rapidly evolving crypto ecosystems.
KuCoin Appoints Industry Veteran James Pinch as Managing Director
To lead its Australian push, KuCoin has named James Pinch as managing director.
Pinch brings extensive experience in Australia’s financial and trading landscape, having previously held senior roles at:
- OKX
- CMC Markets
- Vantage
- Invast Global
In a statement, Pinch emphasized Australia’s strong crypto adoption:
“Australian investors are serious about digital assets. With the market projected to grow 20% to US$1.2 billion by 2026, they demand transparency, stability, and innovation all of which KuCoin delivers with robust engagement and top-tier security.”
Hiring Begins as KuCoin Expands Local Operations
KuCoin plans to build a full local team over the next 12 months, with open roles in:
- Compliance
- Cybersecurity
- Operations
- Product development
This hiring wave supports KuCoin’s goal to establish itself as a long-term player in Australia’s regulated crypto landscape.
KuCoin Joins Australia’s Competitive Crypto Scene
As part of its local entry, KuCoin will sponsor the Australian Crypto Convention to deepen its community involvement.
The exchange now enters a market where major competitors like Gemini are already active. Gemini launched locally in October and has begun offering AUD deposits after securing registration with AUSTRAC to meet AML requirements.
For KuCoin to offer fiat-to-crypto services such as AUD support, it must first obtain an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) a key regulatory requirement for the domestic market.
Australia Prepares New Digital Asset Licensing Framework
KuCoin’s entry comes as Australia finalizes a major overhaul of digital asset regulations. The proposed licensing framework would place crypto platforms under the Corporations Act, significantly increasing compliance expectations.
Once active, the framework could impose penalties of:
- Up to 10% of annual turnover, or
- Over A$16.5 million (US$10.9 million)
…whichever is greater, for any platform operating without proper authorization.
KuCoin’s Global Expansion Continues
KuCoin’s move into Australia follows several major global initiatives:
Thailand Expansion
- Secured a full operating license earlier this year
- Selected as the lead exchange supporting the government’s tokenized bond program (G-Token)
- Handles subscriptions, redemptions, and secondary trading
New Commerce Integrations
- Partnered with Refillarena to allow crypto payments for mobile top-ups, gift cards, and data plans via KuCoin Pay
Cloud Mining Launch
- Rolled out KuMining, enabling users to mine Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and Litecoin without hardware or energy management
These moves underscore KuCoin’s broader strategy to diversify services and expand into new markets with strong regulatory momentum.
