Zhimin Qian, the Chinese fraudster behind one of the largest crypto-related scams in history, is expected to receive a prison sentence of more than 10 years after UK authorities seized over 61,000 Bitcoin linked to her Ponzi scheme.
From “Goddess of Wealth” to Global Fugitive
Once known by aliases like Yadi Zhang and nicknamed the “goddess of wealth,” 47-year-old Zhimin Qian orchestrated a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme that duped more than 128,000 investors across China between 2014 and 2017.
Qian promised extravagant returns through investment products that primarily targeted senior citizens and middle-income savers with little experience in high-risk financial instruments. As the scheme unraveled, she fled China using fake documents, ultimately settling in the United Kingdom, where she attempted to launder her fortune through luxury real estate and lavish spending.
Largest Crypto Seizure in UK History
British authorities later uncovered the staggering extent of her crimes. During coordinated raids, police seized more than 61,000 BTC worth over $6 billion at today’s prices in what became the largest cryptocurrency recovery ever recorded in the UK.
Investigators also confiscated cash, gold, and other luxury assets linked to Qian’s laundering network.
Her associate, Jian Wen, was previously convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for assisting in concealing the stolen Bitcoin.
Facing Up to 14 Years Behind Bars
Qian pleaded guilty in late September to charges under the Proceeds of Crime Act, including possessing and transferring criminal property. She is now awaiting sentencing at Southwark Crown Court, where prosecutors are seeking a maximum term of 14 years.
The two-day hearing is expected to conclude what has been a seven-year international investigation spanning China and the United Kingdom.
Authorities allege that Qian moved billions into Bitcoin to hide the scale of her fraud a move that ultimately helped investigators trace her holdings and dismantle her network.
A Landmark Case for Crypto Crime Enforcement
The Zhimin Qian case stands as a defining moment for global law enforcement in tackling crypto-related financial crime. It not only highlights the challenges of tracing illicit blockchain transactions but also demonstrates that digital assets can be recovered through persistent forensic work and inter-agency cooperation.
Her sentencing is expected to send a strong message to the global crypto industry: no amount of Bitcoin can shield financial fraud from justice.
