Dogecoin’s price has taken a step back, but activity under the surface hints the meme coin could still have room to run. While retail traders remain cautious, rising trading volumes and institutional flows are supporting long-term accumulation.
Price Action: A Sharp Weekly Drop
As of writing, Dogecoin (DOGE) is trading at $0.2489, down 7.2% on the day and 11% over the past week. Its 7-day trading range stretched from $0.2472 to $0.2856, underscoring volatility in the market. Over the last 30 days, DOGE has slipped about 6%.
Despite the pullback, trading activity has surged. Dogecoin posted $2.94 billion in trading volume in the past 24 hours—an 83% jump compared to the previous day. Derivatives data shows a similar story: futures volume soared 114.5% to $7.43 billion, even as open interest dropped 8.5% to $4.78 billion.
This mix of higher turnover and declining open interest suggests speculative positioning, profit-taking, and some liquidation of leveraged bets.
Retail Sentiment Still Muted
Interestingly, retail enthusiasm hasn’t caught fire yet. CryptoQuant analyst Burak Kesmeci highlighted on Sept. 22 that Dogecoin’s Futures Retail Activity metric remains in neutral territory.
During past rallies like the surge to $0.69 in May 2021 and the spike to $0.46 in late 2024 this indicator showed extreme retail activity. The absence of such crowd-driven speculation this time suggests the rally may have more room before overheating.
In other words, “smart money” and institutional players appear to be the ones driving accumulation, lowering the risk of a sudden retail-fueled blow-off top.
Structural Catalysts: ETFs and Treasury Buys
Institutional demand is also being reinforced by new financial products. The U.S. saw the launch of its first spot Dogecoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) earlier this month, including REX-Osprey’s DOJE, which debuted Sept. 12 under a mutual fund framework.
Other applications are still in review, including Grayscale’s bid for direct asset-backed approval. Expectations have been strong—prediction market Polymarket gave a 91% chance of approval prior to DOJE’s launch.
On top of this, treasury purchases from firms like Thumzup Media, which recently added $2 million worth of DOGE to its holdings, are further boosting structural demand.
Technical Picture: Neutral With Key Levels in Play
Dogecoin is consolidating near $0.25 after a rejection from above $0.28.
- RSI (48.7): Neutral, showing no extreme conditions.
- Bollinger Bands: Widening, hinting at rising volatility.
- MACD & momentum: Flashing short-term bearish signals.
- Moving averages: Long-term trends (50, 100, 200-day) remain bullish, but shorter-term averages (10-day EMA/SMA) point to pressure.
Support levels: $0.24 (immediate), $0.22 (stronger).
Resistance levels: $0.285 (recent high), with potential to retest $0.30 if broken.
The Bottom Line
Dogecoin’s price has pulled back, but rising volumes, institutional inflows, and muted retail sentiment suggest there may still be upside ahead. If support holds near $0.24 and retail money eventually joins in, DOGE could be primed for another leg higher.
