Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a massive $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times Magazine and publisher Penguin Random House, accusing them of running a coordinated smear campaign aimed at damaging his reputation, business empire, and political future.
The case, filed in a Florida federal court, targets both a book and several articles published during the 2024 election season that Trump says were filled with falsehoods designed to sway voters and tarnish his brand.
What’s in the Lawsuit
At the center of the lawsuit is “The Luckiest Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success”—a book written by Pulitzer Prize-winning NYT journalists Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig, and published by Penguin. Trump also points to three New York Times articles:
- “The Star-Making Machine That Created Donald Trump” (Sept. 14, 2024)
- “For Trump, a Lifetime of Scandals Heads Toward a Moment of Judgment” (Oct. 20, 2024)
- “As Election Nears, Kelly Warns Trump Would Rule Like a Dictator” (Oct. 24, 2024)
Trump argues these works distort his record, misrepresent his business career, and paint him as unfit for office—all while boosting his Democratic rivals. He claims the publications breached journalistic ethics and betrayed principles of honesty, accuracy, and objectivity.
“The First Amendment has never furnished the Times—or Penguin, or anyone else—with an unqualified privilege to make false, malicious, and defamatory statements,” the lawsuit reads.
Trump’s Case Against the Times
According to the complaint, the articles and book weren’t just political attacks—they allegedly inflicted financial harm by denting Trump’s brand, which he values at $100 billion. The lawsuit draws a connection between the reporting and declines in Trump Media’s stock price, though it largely avoids direct claims about his cryptocurrency ventures.
The filing highlights what Trump sees as “repugnant distortions,” including portrayals of him as a liar, failed businessman, unreliable partner, and even suggestions of mafia ties and tax evasion by his father. A large portion of the lawsuit is also dedicated to outlining Trump’s “unique business acumen,” charisma, and successes across real estate, television, and politics.
Did It Affect Trump’s Crypto Ventures?
While the lawsuit references damage to Trump’s overall business reputation, it makes little mention of crypto. The New York Times has published critical stories about Trump’s memecoin and broader crypto efforts, but the filing does not directly connect these to any measurable financial harm.
In fact, the Trump token lost about 70% of its value shortly after launch in January 2025, and analysts note that market forces—not NYT reporting—are the most likely reason for its slump.
The Times Responds
The New York Times quickly dismissed the lawsuit as politically motivated.
“This lawsuit has no merit,” said a Times spokesperson. “It is an attempt to stifle independent reporting. We will not be intimidated from pursuing the facts.”
Publisher A.G. Sulzberger echoed the sentiment, calling the case “frivolous” and warning of Trump’s “growing anti-press campaign.”
A History of Media Battles
This isn’t Trump’s first showdown with the press. Over the years, he has sued outlets like ABC, CBS, and The Wall Street Journal, sometimes winning significant settlements. His clashes with media figures are also well known Trump has recently celebrated the cancellations of Stephen Colbert’s show and the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s program after their harsh criticism of him.
What Comes Next
Whether Trump’s lawsuit succeeds or not, the legal fight could prove costly for the Times and Penguin. It also reflects a broader battle over press freedom, political bias, and the role of media in shaping public opinion around Trump’s presidency and business ventures.
For now, the Times continues to publish opinion pieces sharply critical of Trump, while Penguin stands by its authors. The court will ultimately decide whether Trump’s $15 billion claim has legal standing or if it’s another chapter in his long-running war with the media.
