Bitget is taking a bold step to reshape the future of its native token, BGB. On September 2, the Seychelles-based exchange announced that it has officially transferred its entire treasury of 440 million BGB to the Morph Foundation, marking a major shift that moves token governance off the exchange and into an independent ecosystem.
The move has two key parts:
- 220 million BGB burned immediately, permanently reducing total supply.
- 220 million locked, with tokens set to be released gradually at 2% per month to fund incentives and growth within the Morph Layer 2 network.
By handing control to the Morph Foundation, Bitget effectively steps back from managing BGB’s economics. Instead, the token is being reborn as the gas and governance asset of the Morph L2 network, putting it at the heart of the project’s long-term roadmap.
Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget, called the move a milestone:
“With this commitment to the Morph Foundation, BGB is entering a new chapter as the gas and governance token of Morph. This upgrade expands BGB into the utility token for the next era of onchain consumer finance, powering payments, applications, and the broader settlement layer for millions of users worldwide.”
Morph’s Vision for Web3 Payments
The Morph network, while keeping its independent brand and core team, is focused on building next-generation Web3 payment infrastructure. This vision extends beyond cheaper transactions—Morph aims to connect consumer finance with onchain technology at scale. Planned integrations include wallets, DeFi protocols, stablecoin issuers, and global payment providers.
BGB will now sit at the center of this economy, handling settlement, governance, and PayFi operations alongside stablecoins. In short, the token is evolving from an exchange-bound asset into a full-fledged utility token supporting everyday financial applications.
A Built-In Audience of 120 Million Users
One of Morph’s biggest advantages is access to Bitget’s massive ecosystem. Between Bitget Exchange and Bitget Wallet, the platform boasts more than 120 million users worldwide. Now, all of them will have direct access to Morph’s decentralized applications and services, creating an instant audience that most Layer 2 networks spend years (and millions in incentives) trying to achieve.
For developers, this opens a powerful opportunity: apps built on Morph will plug directly into this pre-existing user base, creating a uniquely fertile ground for adoption from day one.
To further accelerate growth, the Morph Rails program will fund hackathons, developer grants, and incubation programs all backed by the vesting treasury.
What It Means for BGB
This strategic realignment transforms BGB’s role entirely. No longer just an exchange utility, it’s now positioned as the gas, governance, and payment token for Morph’s broader ecosystem. The immediate supply burn adds scarcity, while the gradual release of remaining tokens ensures a steady flow of funding for ecosystem growth.
With its new foundation-led governance and integration into a Layer 2 network designed for consumer finance, BGB isn’t just tied to Bitget anymore it’s tethered to the future of onchain payments at scale.
