Hut 8, one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining firms, is doubling down on its growth strategy with a massive 1.5 gigawatt expansion across four new facilities in Texas, Illinois, and Louisiana. The move is set to lift the company’s total managed capacity to more than 2.5 gigawatts across 19 sites, making it one of the most ambitious scale-ups in the crypto mining sector to date.
Scaling Beyond Mining
According to Tuesday’s announcement, Hut 8 is targeting regions where energy demand is climbing rapidly, allowing it to lock in favorable contracts early. Each of the new sites will feature modular architectures, giving the company flexibility to serve not just Bitcoin miners, but also AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and next-gen industrial applications.
CEO Asher Genoot said the expansion will enable Hut 8 to “double the scale of our platform and address accelerating demand across energy-intensive use cases.” With its current 1-gigawatt platform already 90% utilized, the company is betting big on a future where digital infrastructure demands continue to rise.
Funding the Expansion
To finance this aggressive growth, Hut 8 is tapping into a $2.4 billion liquidity pool made up of both crypto reserves and traditional financing tools. That includes:
- 10,000+ Bitcoin in reserves (valued at about $1.2B).
- A $200M credit line from Two Prime.
- A repriced $130M facility with Coinbase.
- A $1B at-the-market equity program.
Genoot emphasized that the strength of Hut 8’s balance sheet has been a “critical differentiator”, helping the company minimize execution risk while proving its ability to deliver large-scale projects.
Mining Through American Bitcoin
While Hut 8 focuses on infrastructure, it still maintains direct exposure to Bitcoin mining through its majority stake in American Bitcoin Corp. — a venture launched earlier this year with Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
The restructuring deal behind American Bitcoin transferred 61,000 rigs and 11 U.S. sites to the new company, with Hut 8 holding 80% ownership and the Trump brothers retaining 20%. The venture has already raised $220M from private investors and is preparing to go public through an all-stock merger with Gryphon Digital Mining, expected to close next month.
The Bigger Picture
For Hut 8, the strategy is clear: build out infrastructure that can serve the growing demand for AI, HPC, and digital asset treasuries, while maintaining strong exposure to Bitcoin through a capital-efficient spinout. If executed as planned, the move positions Hut 8 as a hybrid infrastructure and mining powerhouse, capable of thriving in both traditional crypto markets and the broader digital economy.
