Gemini is stepping into Europe with a strong compliance-first strategy. The exchange, founded by the Winklevoss twins, has officially received a MiCA license from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), giving it the ability to operate seamlessly across all 27 EU member states and additional EEA countries.
What the License Means
This new approval, announced on August 21, effectively turns Europe into one large market for Gemini. Instead of battling through individual national regulations, the exchange can now roll out its services like custody, spot trading, and more under one unified license. For the EU, Gemini’s move is also a signal: major exchanges are willing to embrace Europe’s strict rules, potentially proving that regulation can fuel both innovation and trust in crypto.
Building on Previous Approvals
The MiCA license adds to Gemini’s existing Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) approval, which it secured back in May. That earlier license allowed Gemini to offer derivative products in Europe, and together the two licenses form what many in the industry view as the “gold standard” for operating in the EU.
Already, Gemini has been putting its MiFID II license to use. In June, it launched tokenized stocks for European clients digital tokens that represent traditional equities and trade nearly 24/7. This type of product reflects exactly the kind of innovation European regulators hope MiCA will encourage.
At the same time, Gemini has been pursuing bigger ambitions beyond Europe. The company is preparing for a potential IPO, bringing in Wall Street heavyweights like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to guide the process.
Why Gemini is Betting Big on MiCA
Unlike many exchanges that see regulation as a hurdle, Gemini has long framed it as a growth driver. MiCA the EU’s landmark digital asset regulation that comes fully into force this December offers exactly the kind of clarity Gemini has been pushing for. Instead of a patchwork of national rules, it creates a single framework that lets companies like Gemini innovate at scale.
“We believe that clear regulation of the industry is the foundation of global crypto adoption, and MiCA’s implementation has proven that Europe is one of the most innovative and forward-thinking regions regarding this,” said Mark Jennings, Gemini’s Head of Europe.
Part of an Exclusive Club
Gemini is now part of a small group of exchanges that have earned MiCA approval from the MFSA. According to the official registry, it joins just four others Bitpanda, Crypto.com, OKX, and ZBX positioning itself among the early leaders in Europe’s regulated crypto market.
With MiCA in hand and MiFID II already secured, Gemini has built one of the strongest regulatory arsenals in the industry. For European users, that could mean more innovative products delivered within a trusted, compliant framework. For Gemini, it’s a chance to prove that compliance isn’t just about following the rules it can be a competitive edge.
