Sonic, the EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain, has rolled out its Testnet 2.1 a key step toward its upcoming mainnet launch. The update, announced by Sonic Labs on August 12, brings full compatibility with Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade, giving developers and users the ability to deploy smart contracts and experience Sonic’s high-speed performance first-hand.
Why This Matters
Ethereum remains the gold standard for decentralized applications, offering robust developer tools and a thriving ecosystem. But scalability has always been a bottleneck. While Layer 2 solutions have helped, Sonic takes a different approach delivering an optimized Layer 1 chain with its custom SonicVM for faster execution and greater efficiency.
What Pectra Brings to the Table
The Pectra upgrade, which went live on Ethereum’s mainnet in May, introduced 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Key features include:
- Enhanced staking options
- Smart contract functionality for externally owned accounts
- Account abstraction for more flexible wallet interactions
- Gas optimizations to lower transaction costs
By integrating Pectra compatibility, Sonic ensures that its network aligns with Ethereum’s latest advancements while leveraging its own speed and scalability.
Sonic’s Native Token S Gaining Traction
The launch comes as Sonic’s native token, S, continues to gain ground in the DeFi space. S is already integrated with leading protocols like Aave, which holds over $38 billion in total value locked. Sonic’s low fees, speed, and developer-first design are driving adoption.
The ecosystem is also set for further growth after the Sonic Foundation invested 400,000 S tokens in Silo Labs a non-custodial crypto bank operating on Ethereum, Sonic, and Avalanche.
With Testnet 2.1 live and mainnet launch on the horizon, Sonic is positioning itself as a high-performance alternative for developers looking to build on an EVM-compatible chain without sacrificing speed or efficiency.
