It was supposed to be a major moment for Treehouse, the DeFi protocol promising to bring real-world yields to crypto. But less than 24 hours after its token generation event (TGE), the platform’s native token TREE has already tumbled dropping more than 40% since launch.
A Big Launch on Big Exchanges
TREE made its debut on July 29, hitting some of the biggest crypto exchanges out of the gate including Binance, Coinbase, Bitget, KuCoin, and Bybit. Binance even rolled out TREE on its early-access portal, Binance Alpha, before offering it to a wider audience.
At launch, TREE’s total supply was capped at 1 billion tokens, with just over 156 million (15.6%) released into circulation. Of that, 12.5 million TREE tokens were distributed via Binance’s HODLer Airdrop, while another 12.5 million were set aside for future community campaigns. A total of 100 million TREE tokens (10% of supply) were allocated for airdrops tied to Treehouse’s incentive programs like Gaia and GoNuts.
The Crash: What Went Wrong?
According to CoinGecko, TREE launched at $1, briefly rallied to $1.36 in the first five minutes, and then plummeted. At press time, the token is sitting around $0.58, down 41% in just a day.
So, what happened?
The likely culprit is early selling pressure especially from airdrop recipients who got free tokens at TGE and immediately cashed out. While this kind of post-launch dump isn’t new in crypto, it’s a rough look for a project that secured backing from big names like YZi Labs (formerly Binance Labs), Wintermute, Jump Capital, Lightspeed Ventures, and more.
Just earlier this month, RCADE (the native token of RCADE Network) saw a similar fate dropping 30% shortly after its Binance and Bitget listings.
Treehouse: A Quick Overview
Treehouse isn’t just another DeFi protocol. Built on Ethereum, it aims to introduce fixed-income infrastructure to crypto a sector that still lacks reliable, yield-based products tied to real-world financial mechanisms.
Its two main pillars:
- tAssets – Synthetic assets that generate real-time, on-chain yield.
- DOR (Decentralized Offered Rate) – A benchmark interest rate tool for DeFi protocols.
The TREE token powers it all. Holders can:
- Stake TREE to help secure the network.
- Participate in DOR governance.
- Earn validator rewards.
- Use it for protocol fees and premium features.
Tokenomics: Built for the Long Term?
Treehouse seems to have thought through its token distribution. A breakdown of TREE’s allocation includes:
- 20% to Community Rewards
- 17.5% to Strategic Investors
- 12.5% each to the Core Team and DAO Treasury
- 10% for the Ecosystem Fund
- Smaller portions go to contributors, exchange partnerships, and liquidity.
Most of these allocations come with a 48-month vesting schedule and cliff periods meant to discourage short-term flips and keep incentives aligned. But here’s the catch: all airdropped tokens were fully unlocked at launch, making the immediate sell-off all but inevitable.
Final Thoughts
TREE’s post-launch crash is a stark reminder of how volatile new token launches can be even for well-funded, technically sound projects. While Treehouse’s long-term goals in DeFi are promising, short-term price action is telling a different story.
Whether TREE can bounce back and gain traction beyond the initial hype will depend on one thing: real utility and adoption. For now, it’s a rough start but not necessarily the end of the road.
