Ghana is finally stepping up to the crypto table. The country’s central bank is working on a legal framework to license digital asset platforms, aiming to bring order to a fast-growing space that’s already shaping how many Ghanaians transact day-to-day.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, confirmed that the regulatory proposal is in the final stages. The goal is to present the new framework to parliament by September this year.
“We are actually late in the game. It has implications for the local currency,” Asiama admitted, noting that many citizens are already using crypto for regular payments.
Crypto Use Is Rising With or Without Regulation
Despite the lack of regulation, cryptocurrency is already finding its place in Ghana’s economy. From small businesses to cross-border traders, more people are turning to digital assets for everything from payments to investment. But because there’s currently no official tracking system in place, it’s hard to say just how widespread that adoption really is.
Still, the numbers we do have are telling:
According to the Web3 African Group, Ghana recorded $3 billion in crypto transactions from July 2023 to June 2024. That’s no small feat but it’s still dwarfed by Nigeria’s $59 billion over the same period.
A Stronger Cedi, But Crypto’s Role Grows
Interestingly, Ghana’s cedi has seen a remarkable recovery. After falling 25% in value, it’s since rebounded by 48% over the past year making it one of the best-performing fiat currencies globally. Still, Asiama sees the rise of crypto as both a challenge and an opportunity.
The new framework isn’t just about taxation or control it’s about embracing innovation, boosting cross-border trade, and gathering more accurate financial data. In the long run, it may even support strategic investments in web3 technologies.
Ghana Looks to Follow South Africa’s Lead
So far, South Africa is the only African country with a full licensing process for crypto firms. As of December 2024, South Africa had licensed 248 Crypto Asset Service Providers, with another 56 applications under review, according to its Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).
Ghana doesn’t want to be left behind. With crypto already becoming part of everyday life for many of its citizens, regulators are now playing catch-up.
What’s Next?
As crypto use in Ghana continues to grow, the country’s move toward regulation could bring much-needed clarity and confidence to the market. If passed, the upcoming legislation will likely shape how web3 evolves in the region both for innovators and for the millions of users turning to digital assets as part of daily life.
Whether it’s a bold step forward or too little too late remains to be seen. But for now, Ghana seems determined to join the conversation and help write the rules of Africa’s digital future.
