With Bitcoin’s dominance quietly slipping, the crypto spotlight is starting to shift. Traders are now eyeing altcoins for the next wave of explosive moves and two names are catching attention fast: Flare (FLR) and Aleo (ALEO).
So, why now? Let’s break it down.
Bitcoin Cools Off — Altcoins Heat Up
Bitcoin recently surged to a new high near $123,000 in mid-July, but it’s since pulled back to the $118K range, where it’s been moving sideways. When Bitcoin pauses after a big run, traders typically begin rotating into altcoins kicking off what’s known as altcoin season.
One of the clearest signs of this shift is Bitcoin dominance, which has dropped by 4.8 percentage points since late June, falling from 65.1% to 60.3%. Meanwhile, Ethereum’s share has climbed from 8.9% to 11.3%, suggesting that altcoins are gaining momentum.
Another key indicator? The Altcoin Season Index a tool that tracks how many of the top 100 altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin. It shot up from 12 in June to 55 by July 21. While it hasn’t hit the golden 75 mark (the threshold for a full-blown altcoin season), the trend is clearly upward.
Now let’s dive into Flare and Aleo two altcoins that could make serious moves in the coming weeks.
Flare (FLR): Interoperability and DeFi Innovation
Flare has been on a tear up 52% in just one week, hitting a six-month high of $0.0266.
So what’s fueling the rally?
- Interoperability focus: Flare is designed to bring smart contract capabilities to non-smart contract assets like XRP, BTC, and DOGE via its FAssets system. This opens the door for these assets to be used in DeFi for the first time.
- XRPFi ecosystem: Flare is building an ecosystem around XRP, making it a central asset in its DeFi strategy.
- Incentive boost: Earlier this month, Flare launched a 2.2 billion FLR rewards program to drive user engagement and developer adoption.
Technical Setup Looks Bullish
From a charting perspective, FLR recently broke out of a multi-week symmetrical triangle a bullish signal indicating potential for sustained upside.
Even more promising, the 50-day SMA is nearing a golden cross with the 200-day SMA, often viewed as the start of a major uptrend.
If FLR can hold support above $0.030, the next key resistance lies in the $0.038 to $0.045 zone a level that previously saw heavy selling back in early 2024.
Aleo (ALEO): Privacy Layer-1 Meets ZK Power
Next up is Aleo, a privacy-focused Layer-1 blockchain that’s riding the growing hype around zero-knowledge (ZK) technology.
The token recently touched a five-month high of $0.39, and even after a slight pullback, it’s still up 47% over the past month.
What’s behind Aleo’s surge?
- Protocol upgrades: The team rolled out major improvements to its core stack snarkOS and snarkVM boosting performance and security for private smart contracts.
- Hardware push: Aleo has teamed up with Bitmain and TSMC to produce custom ASIC miners for ZK computations. This could fuel demand for ALEO both as a mining reward and for network participation.
Technical Picture Supports the Rally
ALEO’s chart shows a classic double-bottom near $0.18, a strong bullish reversal pattern. It’s also broken out of a rounded bottom formation that began in mid-April another sign of trend reversal.
Currently, the price is comfortably trading above both the 20-day and 50-day EMAs, confirming near-term strength.
If momentum holds, ALEO could target $0.57, which represents a potential 90% upside from current levels.
Final Thoughts
While we’re not quite in full altcoin season just yet, the signs are definitely there. Bitcoin dominance is falling, Ethereum is gaining, and the Altcoin Season Index is steadily climbing.
Both Flare and Aleo are backed by strong fundamentals and compelling technical setups making them two of the most promising altcoin plays to watch this summer.
If Bitcoin continues to trade sideways, expect more capital to rotate into altcoins. And when it does, FLR and ALEO could be leading the charge.
