Function, a crypto infrastructure firm formerly known as Ignition, has just secured $10 million in seed funding to scale its flagship product FBTC, a fully reserved and composable version of Bitcoin designed for institutions.
The funding round was led by Galaxy Digital, which is not only investing capital but also backing the project with liquidity provisioning, governance support, risk management, and strategic guidance. Other notable participants include Antalpha and Mantle.
What Is FBTC?
Function’s main product, FBTC, is a fully backed, 1:1 representation of Bitcoin that allows institutions and corporate treasuries to put their BTC to work without giving up custodial control. In other words, it gives them access to yield-generating opportunities while maintaining full asset backing and transparency.
And it’s already gaining serious traction FBTC has accumulated $1.5 billion in total value locked (TVL), making Function an emerging heavyweight in the space of institutional Bitcoin yield solutions.
A Broader Shift in Bitcoin’s Role
The launch and funding come at a time when Bitcoin is evolving from being just a “digital gold” into a more productive financial asset.
“By 2026, treating bitcoin as a passive treasury asset may no longer be enough. The new standard will be actively earning yield,” said Thomas Chen, CEO of Function, in a comment shared with CoinDesk.
Function isn’t alone in this vision. Projects like Babylon Genesis are building Bitcoin staking infrastructure, allowing BTC holders to earn yield across multiple networks and DeFi apps. Meanwhile, GOAT Network recently launched a Bitcoin Yield Dashboard, offering non-custodial yield strategies directly tied to BTC holdings.
The Bottom Line
With institutions increasingly seeking ways to do more with their idle BTC, Function’s FBTC product and the fresh $10 million in backing positions it at the center of a growing movement to turn Bitcoin into a productive, yield-bearing asset.
As the space continues to mature, the idea of letting Bitcoin sit in cold storage untouched may soon feel outdated. And companies like Function are building the tools to help redefine what it means to “hold” BTC in the next era of finance.
