Indonesia is tightening its grip on the crypto sector. As the nation’s crypto tax revenue climbs to over $36 million a year, the government is rolling out higher tax rates on crypto transactions starting this month.
Crypto Tax Revenue Keeps Rising
According to the country’s Directorate General of Taxes, Indonesia’s annual crypto tax revenue now ranges between $31.25 million and $36.40 million (Rp500 billion to Rp600 billion). That’s a significant jump compared to when the country first began taxing crypto transactions in 2022 back then, yearly collections stood at just $15 million.
After a brief dip in the following year, revenues rebounded in 2024, peaking at nearly $38 million. This sharp growth mirrors a broader surge in crypto activity: the total value of crypto transactions in Indonesia tripled to Rp650 trillion (around $42 billion) in 2024.
Crypto Adoption Is Booming
The surge in tax revenue also reflects the explosive growth of crypto adoption in Indonesia. As of 2025, over 20 million Indonesians roughly 7% of the population have entered the crypto space. That’s nearly double the 11.2 million users recorded in 2022.
This rapid adoption has fueled the rise of local crypto exchanges like Indodax, Tokocrypto, Pintu, and others, which are helping shape Indonesia’s growing digital asset ecosystem.
Tax Rates Go Up—Starting Today
August marks a turning point for Indonesia’s crypto tax policy. As of today:
- The tax on crypto transactions made through local exchanges has increased from 0.11% to 0.21%.
- For overseas exchanges, the rate is even steeper. Previously set at 0.2%, the new rate is now 1%, reflecting a more aggressive approach toward offshore crypto activity.
The update comes under a new regulation from the Ministry of Finance, aimed at tightening control and boosting revenue from this fast-growing sector.
VAT on Crypto Is Scrapped
There’s a silver lining for crypto buyers: the government has eliminated the Value Added Tax (VAT) that was previously applied to crypto purchases. The VAT, which ranged from 0.11% to 0.22%, is now officially waived, easing the tax burden for everyday users.
Bottom Line
Indonesia is going full throttle on crypto regulation, ramping up tax rates while embracing the sector’s growth. With revenue soaring, user numbers exploding, and new policies in effect, the government is making it clear: crypto is here to stay and it’s going to be taxed like any other mainstream asset.
As Indonesia continues to fine-tune its approach, it’s shaping up to be one of Southeast Asia’s most active crypto markets both in user participation and tax enforcement.
