In a landmark move that bridges the worlds of traditional finance and public blockchain infrastructure, JPMorgan is preparing to pilot a new digital deposit token JPMD on Coinbase’s Base blockchain. The initiative marks the first time the Wall Street giant is deploying a dollar-backed token beyond its private systems, signaling an ambitious expansion of its blockchain strategy.
JPMD: A New Breed of Digital Asset
The pilot, first reported by Bloomberg on June 17, will involve a fixed amount of JPMD, fully backed 1:1 by U.S. dollar deposits, being transferred from JPMorgan’s wallet to Coinbase. Initially limited to institutional clients, the token could be extended to include support for other fiat currencies and broader access, pending regulatory approval.
Unlike traditional stablecoins issued by private fintechs, JPMD is a deposit token a regulated financial instrument issued by a licensed bank and backed by bank deposits. It provides holders with a direct claim on the issuing institution, offering greater transparency, compliance, and potential for scalability.
“From an institutional standpoint, deposit tokens are a superior alternative to stablecoins,” said Naveen Mallela, global co-head of Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain division. He added that deposit tokens may eventually earn interest and qualify for deposit insurance, giving them a regulatory edge over conventional stablecoins.
From Kinexys to Base: JPMorgan Steps Into Public Blockchain
JPMD builds on JPMorgan’s blockchain experience through Kinexys, its proprietary platform for tokenized payments and data services. Kinexys currently processes over $2 billion in daily payments, supporting services such as tokenized foreign exchange, derivatives settlement, and data validation through the Liink network.
The JPMD pilot on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, marks JPMorgan’s first public blockchain deployment. While Kinexys remains focused on high-volume corporate transactions, JPMD opens the door to interoperability with decentralized finance (DeFi) and potential retail applications in the future.
Accelerating Blockchain Integration in 2025
The move comes during a breakout year for JPMorgan’s blockchain endeavors:
- In May, JPMorgan completed its first tokenized U.S. Treasury settlement on a public blockchain using Chainlink (LINK) and Ondo Finance (ONDO).
- In April, Kinexys integrated with Nacha’s Phixius to bring blockchain-based account validation to U.S. ACH payment networks.
- The bank also recently started accepting crypto ETF shares, including BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, as loan collateral—a major step in crypto-traditional finance convergence.
A Path Toward Institutional Blockchain Utility
JPMorgan’s move reflects a broader trend in which major financial institutions are embracing tokenized assets, programmable money, and blockchain-based settlement mechanisms. The JPMD initiative positions the bank at the forefront of this shift, offering a model for compliant, dollar-backed digital payments infrastructure at scale.
The JPMD pilot is expected to run for several months, with outcomes likely to inform future adoption strategies. A successful run could lead to expanded use cases across financial services, potentially influencing regulators and competitors alike.
By piloting JPMD on Coinbase’s Base, JPMorgan is signaling a clear intention to build the next generation of institutional finance on blockchain rails. While the token’s initial use will be limited, the implications are far-reaching setting the stage for a future where deposit tokens become a cornerstone of digital money infrastructure.
