According to the blockchain intelligence firm, over 80% of stolen funds<\/strong> resulted from infrastructure-level exploits<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These types of attacks which target the core technical layers of crypto systems were not only the most damaging but also yielded 10 times more value per incident<\/strong> compared to other methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Bybit Breach: A Billion-Dollar Shock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The largest crypto hack of 2025<\/strong> thus far occurred in February<\/strong>, when $1.5 billion<\/strong> was stolen from Dubai-based exchange Bybit<\/strong>. The incident, attributed to North Korean state-sponsored hackers<\/strong>, alone accounted for nearly 70%<\/strong> of total losses this year and heavily skewed average figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This, according to TRM Labs, signals a new phase in crypto warfare, where state-sponsored actors increasingly weaponize cyberattacks<\/strong> for political leverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cAlthough North Korea remains the dominant force in this arena, incidents such as reportedly Israel-linked group Gonjeshke Darande hacking Iran\u2019s Nobitex [\u2026] suggest other state actors may increasingly leverage crypto hacks for geopolitical ends,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    Beyond Hacks: Protocol Exploits Still Loom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    While infrastructure attacks led the charge, protocol-level exploits<\/strong> such as flash loan abuse<\/strong> and re-entrancy attacks<\/strong> accounted for around 12%<\/strong> of H1 losses. These exploits typically target smart contract vulnerabilities<\/strong> in decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Historical Context and Growing Threat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The $2.1 billion figure marks a 10% increase over H1 2022\u2019s record<\/strong> and nearly matches the full-year total for 2024<\/strong>, underscoring the escalating threat landscape. TRM Labs also referenced earlier findings from Immunefi<\/strong> and PeckShield<\/strong>, which reported over $1.63 billion<\/strong> in crypto thefts across 60 attacks<\/strong> in Q1 2025 alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notably, centralized exchanges<\/strong> accounted for 94% of the total H1 losses<\/strong>, driven by the catastrophic breaches at Bybit<\/strong> and Phemex<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
