A recent wave of on-chain data has raised questions about the sustainability of Bitcoin\u2019s current market momentum. According to new research from CryptoQuant, a significant drop in short-term holder activity and historically low demand growth suggest that fresh interest in the world\u2019s largest cryptocurrency may be fading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short-Term Holders Dump 800,000 BTC in Less Than a Month<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

CryptoQuant reports that wallets associated with short-term Bitcoin holders (STHs) those who purchased BTC within the last few weeks or months have shrunk considerably since late May. As of June 19, this group now controls only around 4.5 million BTC, a steep fall from 5.3 million on May 27. The decline of approximately 800,000 BTC, or 15.1%, indicates a potential exodus of recent entrants from the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically, short-term holders grow in number during bull runs as new investors buy BTC from long-term holders, helping to push prices higher. A declining STH balance, however, is often a bearish signal implying that fewer new buyers are entering the market and some are exiting, possibly locking in profits or cutting losses amid recent price fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demand Momentum Hits Record Low<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The drop in short-term holders comes amid an even more concerning trend: Bitcoin demand momentum has slumped to its weakest level on record. According to CryptoQuant, the metric has fallen by 2 million BTC, underscoring a broader cooling in overall buying interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past 30 days, only 118,000 BTC were added through spot buying, significantly down from the 228,000 BTC increase observed at the end of May. This sluggish growth points to a notable slowdown in market appetite, both from retail investors and institutional players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whales and ETFs Also Pull Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Adding to the bearish sentiment is a decline in whale accumulation. Large BTC holders have trimmed their monthly acquisition rate from 3.9% to just 1.7%. Likewise, institutional demand via U.S.-based spot Bitcoin ETFs has taken a hit. Daily ETF purchases have dropped sharply from 9,700 BTC in April to just 3,300 BTC today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The futures market is also signaling caution. After BTC briefly touched $110,000 last week, many traders opted to take profits. The price dip to $105,000 has led to an increase in short positions, suggesting bearish sentiment is gaining traction among leveraged traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Not All Institutions Are Cooling Off<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite these red flags, several heavyweight institutions remain firmly bullish on Bitcoin. BlackRock, for instance, just concluded a six-day buying spree that saw it acquire $1.4 billion worth of BTC. The asset management giant now holds 670,295 BTC, worth approximately $74.8 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MicroStrategy the corporate Bitcoin bellwether also recently added 10,100 BTC to its balance sheet, bringing its total stash to 592,100 BTC. This latest $1.05 billion investment reaffirms the company\u2019s aggressive accumulation strategy under Chairman Michael Saylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other companies, including Japan\u2019s MetaPlanet and Europe\u2019s The Blockchain Group, continue to grow their Bitcoin reserves. MetaPlanet has surpassed the 10,000 BTC threshold, and The Blockchain Group is reportedly on track to announce further acquisitions amid surging interest in Bitcoin as a strategic asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bitcoin Price Steadies but for How Long?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For now, Bitcoin\u2019s price action remains muted. The cryptocurrency has been trading in a narrow range between $100,000 and $110,000 over the past month. At the time of writing, BTC stands at approximately $106,000 up 2.4% from its weekly low, but far from signaling renewed bullish momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outlook<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The data paints a mixed picture. On one hand, retail and short-term investor interest appears to be waning, with shrinking spot demand and reduced ETF inflows. On the other, institutional conviction among major players like BlackRock and MicroStrategy remains unwavering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
