The attacker behind the $13 million Magic Internet Money (MIM) exploit<\/strong> in March 2025 has resurfaced, moving a significant portion of the stolen funds through the controversial crypto mixer Tornado Cash<\/strong>, according to blockchain security firm CertiK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$7.5M in Stolen ETH Laundered<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

CertiK revealed that 3,001 ETH<\/strong> worth approximately $7.57 million<\/strong> was transferred from a wallet beginning with 0x51baB<\/strong> into Tornado Cash. This represents more than half of the total stolen funds<\/strong> from the Abracadabra Finance<\/strong> exploit that compromised MIM, a decentralized stablecoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe MIM_Spell exploiter has just sent 3,001 ETH (~$7.57M) to Tornado Cash from 0x51baB,\u201d CertiK confirmed in a recent post on X.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The laundering process involved a multi-step transfer chain<\/strong> across four Ethereum wallets<\/strong>, beginning with a 6,261 ETH transfer equal to the original amount stolen in the exploit. Two of the intermediary wallets then split and transferred 3,001 ETH<\/strong> into Tornado Cash<\/strong>, making it increasingly difficult to trace the funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Exploit Happened<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The original hack occurred on March 25, 2025<\/strong>, when Abracadabra\u2019s gmCauldron contracts<\/strong> specifically the integration between decentralized exchange GMX<\/strong> and the protocol\u2019s lending mechanism were exploited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to CertiK\u2019s analysis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe exploit allowed the attacker to borrow funds without repaying them and liquidate the funds due to a flaw in the liquidation logic, which failed to overwrite RouterOrder collateral records.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This critical vulnerability enabled the attacker to double-count collateral<\/strong>, borrow additional funds, and exit without proper settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abracadabra’s Response and Recovery<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the aftermath of the breach, Abracadabra Finance<\/strong> acted swiftly, restoring 50% of the stolen funds<\/strong> via internal treasury buybacks and strategic operations. The protocol emphasized that user funds remained unaffected<\/strong>, as the exploit only targeted internal smart contract logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To incentivize restitution, the team also offered the hacker a 20% white-hat bounty<\/strong>, urging them to return the remaining assets. However, with the latest movement to Tornado Cash, hopes of recovery are fading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
