Speaking at a regulatory conference in Madrid on Thursday, Knot said that the financial world may be <strong>approaching a critical tipping point<\/strong> as the boundaries between crypto and traditional finance continue to blur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe May Be Approaching a Tipping Point\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The FSB has traditionally maintained that crypto assets do <strong>not yet pose a systemic risk<\/strong> to financial markets. However, Knot suggested this assessment may soon change. \u201cRecent developments suggest we may be approaching a tipping point,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key area of concern is the role of <strong>stablecoins<\/strong>, which have increasingly become a bridge between decentralized finance and the traditional monetary system. Knot emphasized that many stablecoin issuers now <strong>hold large volumes of U.S. Treasuries<\/strong>, making them a potential pressure point in the financial system. \u201cThis is a segment we must monitor closely,\u201d he cautioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ETFs and Retail Exposure Raise Concerns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Knot also addressed the <strong>accelerated entry of retail investors<\/strong> into crypto markets, particularly through <strong>exchange-traded funds (ETFs)<\/strong>. With the launch of multiple spot ETFs for assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, the <strong>barriers to retail participation have dropped significantly<\/strong>, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe interlinkages with the traditional financial system continue to grow,\u201d said Knot, pointing out that the convenience and legitimacy provided by ETFs could amplify risks if the underlying crypto markets experience stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Call for Evolving Regulation and Global Coordination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Knot acknowledged that crypto\u2019s popularity stems in part from long-standing inefficiencies in <strong>cross-border payments<\/strong>, but stressed that <strong>regulatory frameworks must evolve in parallel with the technology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe crypto ecosystem will continue to evolve and so must our regulatory frameworks,\u201d he said. He emphasized that countries are already developing their own sets of rules but warned that <strong>disjointed regulation could lead to loopholes<\/strong> and arbitrage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe FSB\u2019s recommendations offer a common foundation,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis is especially important given the inherently cross-border nature of crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Broader Vision of Financial Stability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond crypto, Knot addressed additional systemic challenges including <strong>non-bank financial intermediation (NBFI)<\/strong> and <strong>climate-related financial risks<\/strong>. He warned that these issues are similarly transnational and require <strong>collective global action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFinancial stability is an international public good,\u201d Knot concluded. \u201cEvery single issue I have mentioned today NBFI, banking, crypto, payments, climate they all cross borders. And so must our response be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing of the Guard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Klaas Knot\u2019s tenure as FSB Chair will officially end on <strong>June 30, 2025<\/strong>. He will be succeeded by <strong>Andrew Bailey<\/strong>, the current Governor of the Bank of England.
