In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to forfeit <strong>more than $1.5 million<\/strong> and will serve <strong>three years of supervised release<\/strong> following incarceration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Business That Operated in the Shadows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>2017 to 2020<\/strong>, Nguyen operated a business called <strong>National Vending<\/strong>, which offered Bitcoin-for-cash services under the guise of a vending machine operation. However, prosecutors say the business was anything but ordinary. It was never registered with the <strong>Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN)<\/strong>, and it <strong>ignored key federal anti-money laundering (AML) laws<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DOJ outlined how Nguyen deliberately <strong>concealed the true nature<\/strong> of his operations. He used <strong>encrypted messaging apps<\/strong> to communicate with clients, made structured cash deposits to avoid detection, and used <strong>techniques designed to obfuscate transaction trails<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHe used encrypted messaging apps to communicate with customers, using technologies that made it more difficult to trace Bitcoin transactions and breaking cash deposits of more than $10,000 into smaller cash deposits over consecutive days or at different branches of the same bank,\u201d said the <strong>U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Massachusetts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Serving Criminals and Scammers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to court documents, Nguyen\u2019s client base included <strong>a methamphetamine dealer<\/strong> and <strong>individuals involved in romance scams<\/strong>, further highlighting the illegal scope of the operation. Earlier this month, <strong>Alex Mashinsky<\/strong>, the founder of the now-bankrupt <strong>Celsius Network<\/strong>, was sentenced to <strong>12 years in prison<\/strong> for defrauding customers out of billions of dollars.
