Murphy<\/strong>, a lawyer licensed in New York and Virginia and known online as <strong>@MetaLawMan<\/strong>, accuses the DHS of failing to respond to a <strong>Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)<\/strong> request submitted on <strong>February 12, 2025<\/strong>. Murphy alleges the agency has <strong>ignored its legal obligation<\/strong> to provide a timely response, prompting him to take legal action in the <strong>U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGiven the massive public and private investment in Bitcoin, it is important for Mr. Murphy and the public to understand better what the federal government knows about the identity of the actor(s) responsible for creating Bitcoin,\u201d stated Murphy\u2019s legal team in the complaint.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Search for Satoshi: DHS Interview Under Scrutiny<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the center of Murphy\u2019s FOIA request is an alleged <strong>2019 interview<\/strong> with <strong>DHS Special Agent Rana Saoud<\/strong>, in which she reportedly claimed to know the identity of Nakamoto. According to Murphy, Saoud stated that <strong>four individuals<\/strong> were involved in Bitcoin\u2019s creation and that she had met with them in person to discuss its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murphy is seeking <strong>access to any documents or communications related to that interview<\/strong>, believing the information could have far-reaching implications. The lawyer argues that with <strong>billions of dollars now invested in Bitcoin ETFs<\/strong>, and recent U.S. discussions around forming a <strong>strategic Bitcoin reserve<\/strong>, knowing who created the protocol has become a matter of <strong>public and economic interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murphy has also called on <strong>DHS Secretary Kristi Noem<\/strong>, appointed under President Trump\u2019s administration, to voluntarily release the information in question. Since Bitcoin\u2019s whitepaper was published in 2008, dozens of individuals have been speculated to be Nakamoto, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hal Finney<\/strong>, the first recipient of a Bitcoin transaction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dorian Nakamoto<\/strong>, a Japanese-American engineer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adam Back<\/strong>, creator of Hashcash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wei Dai<\/strong>, inventor of b-money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paul Le Roux<\/strong>, a former criminal mastermind linked to early cryptographic software<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, <strong>Canadian cryptographer Peter Todd<\/strong> was featured in HBO\u2019s <em>Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery<\/em>, which speculated that he may be Satoshi based on writing style and early forum activity. Todd has <strong>strongly denied<\/strong> the claims, calling the documentary&#8217;s conclusions \u201cludicrous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains to be seen how the DHS will respond to the lawsuit.
