Despite these transfers, the hacker still <strong>controls 399,000 ETH<\/strong>, a sum <strong>larger than the holdings of both the Ethereum Foundation and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the Hacker Is Laundering the Stolen ETH<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain<\/strong>, the attacker has been <strong>splitting the stolen ETH into smaller amounts<\/strong> and moving them across <strong>multiple addresses<\/strong>. The hacker has been utilizing <strong>THORChain (RUNE) for cross-chain swaps<\/strong>, converting ETH into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bitcoin (BTC)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dai (DAI)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other digital assets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udea8 <em>100,000 $ETH (~$250M) has been laundered by #Bybit hacker in under 4 days!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe hacker has now washed 20% of the stolen 499K ETH, actively splitting funds into smaller amounts across multiple addresses and using THORChain for cross-chain swaps into BTC, DAI, and other assets.\u201d<br>\u2014 <strong>Spot On Chain (@spotonchain), Feb. 26, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite laundering a <strong>significant portion of the stolen funds<\/strong>, the hacker still holds <strong>399,000 ETH<\/strong>, raising concerns about further potential sell-offs in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bybit Repays 40,000 ETH Loan from Bitget<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Bybit has repaid the 40,000 ETH loan it received from Bitget<\/strong> following the attack. <strong>Bitget CEO Gracy Chen<\/strong> confirmed in a <strong>Feb. 25 X post<\/strong> that the loan, which was issued <strong>without interest or collateral<\/strong>, was purely a <strong>sign of industry support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConfirmed that the 40,000 #ETH loaned to #Bybit has been returned to #Bitget. No interest, no collateral\u2014this was simply about supporting a peer in need.
