Why is spot demand still weak?

Bitcoin ETFs are attracting billions of dollars again, but the wider spot market is still sending a much weaker signal.

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded a sharp wave of inflows toward the end of September. At the same time, CryptoQuant’s estimate of broader Bitcoin spot demand remained below zero.

At first glance, those two trends may appear contradictory. In reality, they measure very different parts of the market.

ETF inflows show how much capital is moving into U.S.-listed Bitcoin investment products. CryptoQuant’s apparent demand metric, on the other hand, attempts to measure whether buyers across the broader Bitcoin market are absorbing the available supply.

That difference has become increasingly important for traders trying to determine whether Bitcoin’s latest rally is being supported by broad-based accumulation or mainly by demand coming through ETFs.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted roughly $2.39 billion between September 21 and September 25.

CryptoQuant’s 30-day apparent Bitcoin demand improved from around -182,000 BTC on September 24 to approximately -101,000 BTC by October 1.

Despite that improvement, broader apparent demand had not yet moved into positive territory.

Trading an existing ETF share does not necessarily force an ETF issuer to buy additional Bitcoin.

ETF flows became more mixed after the strong late-September run.

The next major signal will be whether continued ETF inflows are accompanied by stronger spot buying and broader Bitcoin accumulation.

The late-September surge was clearly visible in data from Farside Investors.

Across five trading sessions, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $999 million, $714.7 million, $346.9 million, $190.7 million and $134.5 million in daily net inflows.

That represents a powerful return of capital to Bitcoin investment products after a much more inconsistent summer.

However, these figures measure flows into investment vehicles. They do not represent every Bitcoin purchase happening across the market.

CryptoQuant’s apparent demand indicator tells a different story.

Its 30-day reading was still negative at the beginning of October, despite recovering significantly from levels seen in late September.

This does not mean that ETF data and CryptoQuant data conflict with each other. They simply measure different things.

ETF data tracks subscriptions and redemptions in a group of investment products. CryptoQuant attempts to estimate Bitcoin demand across the broader spot market over a rolling period.

Neither indicator provides a complete picture of every buyer or seller.

What actually happens when money enters a Bitcoin ETF?

One of the most important distinctions involves the difference between buying ETF shares and creating new ETF shares.

When an investor buys an existing Bitcoin ETF share on a stock exchange, that transaction may simply occur between the buyer and another investor or market maker.

The ETF itself does not automatically need to issue a new share or purchase additional Bitcoin.

New Bitcoin demand is more directly associated with net ETF creations, when the fund’s total share count and underlying exposure increase.

Even then, the relationship between ETF inflows and immediate Bitcoin purchases is not always perfectly straightforward.

Authorized participants, trading desks, inventory management, settlement timing and issuer reporting can all affect when the underlying Bitcoin transaction becomes visible.

That is why high ETF trading volume should not automatically be interpreted as fresh Bitcoin buying.

Heavy trading can certainly show strong investor interest, but it can also reflect investors transferring positions between one another.

The more useful signals are net creations, changes in fund holdings and whether other parts of the Bitcoin market are also accumulating coins.

Late September showed concentrated ETF demand

September 21 provides a good example of how concentrated ETF flows can become.

Farside recorded around $999 million in aggregate Bitcoin ETF inflows that day.

BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for approximately $381.4 million, Fidelity’s FBTC brought in around $238.8 million and ARK and 21Shares’ ARKB recorded roughly $289.1 million.

Several other funds reported much smaller flows or no meaningful activity.

This matters because a large institution allocating capital through one or two products can significantly increase the overall daily ETF total.

That does not necessarily mean buyers are equally active across every exchange, fund or region.

The strong five-day run also did not continue smoothly.

September 30 recorded approximately $148.7 million in outflows.

October 1 then returned to a positive $102.7 million, followed by another $189.9 million inflow on October 2.

October 5 reversed again with an approximately $89.8 million outflow.

At the time of the original report, Farside’s October 6 data also contained missing values for several products, meaning the displayed total could not yet be treated as a final market-wide figure.

The broader conclusion is therefore more nuanced.

Bitcoin ETFs experienced a powerful surge of buying in late September, but daily flows became considerably less consistent afterward.

Why can ETFs buy while spot demand remains negative?

Bitcoin demand extends far beyond ETFs.

Miners continuously receive newly issued coins. Long-term holders decide whether to hold or sell their Bitcoin. Traders move assets onto and off exchanges, while institutional investors can purchase Bitcoin through custodians and over-the-counter trading desks.

Buyers also operate across exchanges outside the United States.

Because of this, ETF buying can be strong while other Bitcoin holders are simultaneously selling enough coins to keep broader market demand weak.

CryptoQuant’s apparent demand metric attempts to estimate this relationship using onchain supply behavior.

It is not a direct count of every buyer in the Bitcoin market and does not measure individual order-book bids.

A negative reading means that, according to CryptoQuant’s methodology, demand has not yet absorbed enough supply over the measured period.

It does not mean nobody is buying Bitcoin.

That distinction is important.

CryptoQuant’s 30-day apparent demand improved from roughly -182,000 BTC on September 24 to approximately -101,000 BTC on October 1.

That means the estimated imbalance narrowed by around 81,000 BTC.

The direction improved considerably, but the reading remained negative.

ETF dollars and Bitcoin demand cannot be directly compared

There is another important issue when comparing these figures: they use completely different units and time periods.

The approximately $2.39 billion ETF inflow is measured in U.S. dollars across five U.S. trading sessions.

CryptoQuant’s approximately -101,000 BTC apparent demand figure is measured in Bitcoin across 30 calendar days.

Simply converting the ETF inflows into BTC would still not make the figures directly comparable.

Bitcoin’s price changed throughout the period, settlement mechanisms differ and the measurement windows do not perfectly overlap.

Both indicators remain useful, but they are useful for different reasons.

One shows demand for regulated Bitcoin investment products.

The other attempts to show whether the broader Bitcoin market is absorbing supply.

CryptoQuant also reported an apparent demand contraction of roughly 170,000 BTC over 30 days in its late-September research.

Exact readings can change depending on the date and methodology, which makes these indicators more useful for identifying direction and persistence than identifying the exact marginal buyer.

The buyers outside ETFs are harder to identify

Analysts frequently use exchange balances as another way to estimate Bitcoin demand and available supply.

However, exchange movements can be difficult to interpret.

A Bitcoin withdrawal may represent a long-term holder moving funds into self-custody.

But it could also represent a transfer to another custodian, collateral movement or an exchange reorganizing its own wallets.

Similarly, depositing Bitcoin onto an exchange does not automatically mean the owner intends to sell.

Onchain data can show addresses and transactions, but it cannot always reveal the intention behind those movements.

That is why identifying exactly which group of investors is absorbing Bitcoin supply requires more than simply watching wallet balances.

Coinbase premium provides another clue

The Coinbase premium can help analysts understand the strength of U.S. spot demand.

The indicator compares Bitcoin pricing on Coinbase with prices available on offshore trading venues.

CryptoQuant commentary around the beginning of October pointed to a negative Coinbase premium while its apparent demand estimate was improving.

That suggested U.S. spot-market bids were still relatively weak during that period.

However, this indicator also has limitations.

Arbitrage activity, liquidity differences between exchanges and the exact measurement window can influence the result.

ETF buying can also be routed through institutional trading desks, meaning ETF creations can remain positive even while direct U.S. exchange demand appears soft.

Futures can push Bitcoin higher without strong spot buying

Bitcoin’s price can also rise because of derivatives activity.

Traders can gain large amounts of Bitcoin exposure using futures without purchasing and holding the underlying cryptocurrency.

For example, heavily leveraged long positions can help push prices higher during a short squeeze.

However, that type of demand can disappear quickly if traders close their positions or are liquidated.

This is why analysts also watch funding rates, open interest and liquidation data.

Those indicators help distinguish between a rally supported by lasting spot accumulation and one that depends heavily on leveraged trading.

Bitcoin ETFs still have major buying power

The gap between ETF inflows and broader demand should not undermine the significance of the ETF market.

Since U.S. spot Bitcoin products launched, Farside’s cumulative figures have recorded tens of billions of dollars in net subscriptions.

ETFs make Bitcoin easier to access through traditional brokerage accounts and offer familiar custody structures for institutional investors.

They also allow organizations operating under traditional investment mandates to gain Bitcoin exposure more easily.

If ETF creations remain consistently positive, those funds can remove meaningful quantities of Bitcoin from actively traded supply.

That can support the market even when retail exchange activity is relatively weak.

However, cumulative ETF flows should not be confused with current demand.

Cumulative numbers include all previous subscriptions and redemptions.

Bitcoin’s changing price also affects the dollar value of holdings without generating new inflows.

Meanwhile, institutions can move capital between different funds.

The late-September ETF surge therefore confirms a period of strong buying.

It does not guarantee that investors will continue buying Bitcoin at the same pace throughout October.

Institutional ETF demand does not always mean bullish conviction

Another complication is the way institutions use Bitcoin ETFs.

An investor may buy an ETF as part of a long-term bullish allocation.

But the same ETF could also be used as part of a hedged trading strategy, a basis trade or a temporary portfolio position.

Public ETF flow data cannot reveal all of those strategies.

That means large inflows show that capital is entering the products, but they do not necessarily prove that every investor behind those flows expects Bitcoin to keep rising.

The more important question is whether the capital stays invested once short-term trading opportunities change.

What would confirm stronger Bitcoin demand?

A stronger bullish signal would likely require several indicators to improve at the same time.

First, Bitcoin ETFs would need to continue recording persistent net creations.

Second, CryptoQuant’s apparent spot demand would ideally move above zero and remain positive.

Third, selling pressure from older Bitcoin holders would need to weaken.

Finally, exchange pricing and order-book activity would need to show sustained spot buying.

None of those signals is perfect on its own.

Together, however, they would provide much stronger evidence that Bitcoin is experiencing broad-based accumulation rather than demand concentrated mainly through ETFs.

The opposite scenario would also be meaningful.

If ETF flows become negative again while apparent spot demand remains below zero, Bitcoin rallies could become increasingly dependent on leverage or limited immediate selling pressure.

That would not automatically mean Bitcoin’s price must fall.

It would simply suggest that buying has not yet broadened across enough parts of the market.

Higher Bitcoin prices can make dollar flows look stronger

Dollar-denominated ETF flows can also be misleading when Bitcoin’s price changes sharply.

A fixed amount of money buys fewer BTC when Bitcoin becomes more expensive.

For example, the same $500 million inflow will purchase fewer Bitcoin at $100,000 per coin than at $70,000.

The reverse is also true.

A smaller dollar inflow at a lower Bitcoin price may actually represent more coins being accumulated.

That is why analysts should also examine ETF creations in BTC terms and monitor reported fund holdings instead of relying entirely on headline dollar numbers.

Short-term data can exaggerate market trends

Choosing a particularly strong week can also make a trend appear more consistent than it really is.

The five consecutive sessions of strong September ETF inflows were significant.

However, the days that followed were far more mixed.

September 30 turned negative.

October 1 and October 2 returned to positive territory.

October 5 moved negative again.

A weekly total may therefore remain positive even when daily flows are moving sharply in both directions.

Similarly, a monthly number can hide individual sessions in which sellers dominated.

The time frame should always match the claim being made.

Daily data can reveal whether buyers were present during a specific session.

Longer time periods are better for determining whether investors are maintaining their allocations.

Missing ETF data should not be treated as zero

Investors should also pay attention to incomplete reporting.

Farside aggregates flow estimates across individual funds.

If a fund reports zero flows, that indicates no net movement was recorded.

A blank or unavailable value means something very different.

It means the information has not yet been reported or included.

At the time of the article, several major October 6 entries remained unavailable.

Treating those missing figures as zero could create a misleading market signal.

The final total may change once complete information becomes available.

Geography also affects Bitcoin demand indicators

Different Bitcoin indicators also represent different geographic markets.

U.S. ETF flows track products listed in the United States.

However, the underlying investor could still be an international institution using a U.S. brokerage account.

CryptoQuant’s apparent demand indicator analyzes Bitcoin activity across the global blockchain network.

The Coinbase premium measures another specific section of the market: relative demand on a major U.S. exchange compared with offshore platforms.

Those indicators overlap, but they do not measure exactly the same activity.

It is therefore entirely possible for ETFs to experience significant inflows while the Coinbase premium remains weak.

Both observations can be accurate simultaneously.

There is no need to force every Bitcoin indicator into one conclusion

Bitcoin’s market structure is too complex for one indicator to explain everything.

If ETFs continue accumulating Bitcoin while broader apparent demand remains negative, those funds may simply be absorbing part of the supply being sold by miners and existing holders.

That situation is still more supportive for Bitcoin than having no ETF demand at all.

However, it would not necessarily mean the entire Bitcoin market is facing a shortage of available coins.

If apparent demand eventually moves positive, that would provide stronger evidence that supply and demand conditions are changing.

If ETF inflows weaken again, it would show that even institutional demand through investment products is less consistent than the late-September surge suggested.

The trend over time matters far more than one dramatic daily figure.

What to watch next

The most important signal will be whether Bitcoin ETF inflows continue throughout October.

Completed daily flow data from Farside and updated fund holdings will help confirm whether late September marked the beginning of sustained institutional accumulation or simply a short burst of demand.

CryptoQuant’s next 30-day apparent demand readings will also be important.

If the indicator continues moving toward zero and eventually becomes positive, it could suggest broader Bitcoin demand is finally catching up with supply.

The Coinbase premium, spending activity from older Bitcoin holders and exchange order books can provide additional context.

However, each metric should be interpreted carefully because custody transfers, exchange-specific conditions and trading strategies can distort individual readings.

The key question is no longer whether Bitcoin ETFs are capable of generating meaningful demand.

The data clearly shows that they are.

The bigger question is whether enough buyers outside the ETF market are also accumulating Bitcoin to absorb selling pressure throughout the broader spot market.

As of October 7, the available evidence showed meaningful improvement in broader Bitcoin demand, but it had not yet turned positive.

FAQs

Did Bitcoin ETFs buy $2.39 billion of Bitcoin in one week?

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $2.39 billion in net inflows across five trading sessions from September 21 through September 25. However, ETF inflow figures should not automatically be interpreted as an identical amount of Bitcoin purchased immediately on spot exchanges because settlement and fund creation mechanisms can differ.

Does negative apparent demand mean nobody bought Bitcoin?

No. Negative apparent demand does not mean there were no Bitcoin buyers. It indicates that, according to CryptoQuant’s methodology, estimated demand remained weaker than the relevant supply measure over the period being analyzed.

Why doesn’t secondary ETF trading count as a new inflow?

When an investor buys an existing ETF share from another investor or market maker, ownership simply changes hands. The fund does not necessarily need to create additional shares or purchase more Bitcoin.

Is a negative Coinbase premium decisive?

No. A negative Coinbase premium can indicate relatively weaker U.S. spot demand, but exchange liquidity, arbitrage activity and market conditions can also affect the indicator.

Can futures push Bitcoin higher without spot accumulation?

Yes. Futures traders can gain leveraged Bitcoin exposure without purchasing the underlying asset. This can help drive prices higher temporarily, particularly during short squeezes, even when spot-market accumulation remains limited.

What is the latest completed ETF flow?

The article reported a $189.9 million Bitcoin ETF inflow on October 2 followed by an approximately $89.8 million outflow on October 5.
