Bitget CEO Gracy Chen has since called on THORChain to block addresses linked to the hackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That request has sparked debate because the stolen assets did not move through THORChain alone. They also passed across networks and services including Ethereum, BNB Chain and Bitcoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dispute highlights a long-running tension in crypto between decentralization and intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stolen funds moved across several networks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Bitget, the attack involved a vulnerability in a third-party security product that allowed the attackers to obtain internal credentials and submit fraudulent withdrawal requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bitget said its private keys and cold wallets were not compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the theft, the assets were moved through a number of blockchains and decentralized services. Investigators traced transactions across BNB Chain, Ethereum and THORChain before portions of the funds were converted into Bitcoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This raises an important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If THORChain is expected to stop processing transactions involving stolen funds, should Bitcoin miners, Ethereum validators and other blockchain participants be expected to do the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Base-layer blockchains typically process valid transactions according to protocol rules without deciding whether particular funds are connected to criminal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes assigning responsibility much more complicated once stolen assets start moving across multiple networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">THORChain operates differently from a traditional blockchain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THORChain is not exactly the same as Bitcoin or Ethereum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protocol operates cross-chain liquidity pools and vaults that allow users to exchange assets across different blockchain networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its infrastructure relies on independent node operators and threshold-signature technology to authorize transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike a centralized exchange, however, THORChain does not have a single administrator who can simply freeze a user&#8217;s account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any permanent blacklist or transaction restriction would likely require changes to the protocol&#8217;s rules and support from enough network participants to enforce them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means Bitget&#8217;s request is not simply asking a company to block one wallet. It could require a broader change in how the decentralized network handles transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A network halt is different from freezing one wallet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THORChain does have emergency mechanisms that can temporarily stop parts of the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These include chain-specific trading halts, signing halts and wider network trading pauses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, using those controls can affect more than the suspected attacker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A network-wide halt could prevent legitimate users from making swaps across supported chains. Even a narrower halt could disrupt users interacting with a specific blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That creates a difficult trade-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stopping suspicious funds may help investigators or slow an attacker, but shutting down part of a permissionless network can also affect users who have no connection to the theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If emergency controls were regularly used whenever stolen funds entered the network, the crypto industry would need clearer standards defining when intervention is justified and who gets to make that decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blocking THORChain would not eliminate other routes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another issue is that attackers often have many different ways to move funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the Bitget breach, investigators identified activity involving numerous platforms and protocols, including Uniswap, LI.FI, Across, Stargate, deBridge, Relay, Celer, PancakeSwap and other cross-chain services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These platforms were not identified as the source of the original compromise. Instead, they were among the routes the attackers allegedly used afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blocking one service could slow the movement of stolen funds, but it would not necessarily stop the attackers entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They could potentially switch to other bridges, decentralized exchanges or blockchains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A permanent wallet-screening system would also raise additional questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who would maintain the blacklist? What evidence would be required before an address was added? What happens if an address is wrongly identified? And who would be responsible for correcting mistakes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are difficult issues for networks built around open and permissionless participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public blockchains are helping investigators follow the money<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While decentralized networks can make intervention difficult, their transparency can also help investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers reportedly identified <strong>28 attacker-controlled addresses across eight blockchain networks<\/strong> shortly after the Bitget breach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because blockchain transactions are generally public, investigators can follow funds as they move between wallets and networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THORChain&#8217;s transaction history also remains publicly visible, meaning investigators can examine cross-chain swaps without requesting access to a private database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one sequence, some of the stolen assets were reportedly tracked through TRON, Ethereum and THORChain before reaching Bitcoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators later linked roughly four BTC to a Wasabi CoinJoin transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CoinJoin made it more difficult to connect individual Bitcoin inputs and outputs, but the earlier cross-chain transactions remained traceable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving funds through a decentralized exchange or cross-chain protocol does not automatically erase the transaction history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where should responsibility lie?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bitget incident shows why crypto needs a clearer understanding of responsibility after major hacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Centralized exchanges and custodians can often freeze accounts or stop withdrawals because they directly control user balances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Permissionless blockchain networks operate differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their participants generally process transactions according to protocol rules rather than deciding whether each transaction is morally or legally acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross-chain protocols such as THORChain sit somewhere between these models. They provide financial infrastructure but remain dependent on decentralized node operators rather than centralized administrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debate is therefore not simply about whether stolen funds should be recovered. Few would dispute that victims should have access to effective recovery efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The harder question is how far decentralized infrastructure should be expected to change its operating rules in response to an external theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bitget hack highlights crypto&#8217;s decentralization dilemma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bitget has a legitimate interest in recovering stolen assets and identifying those responsible for the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, requiring open networks to block particular wallets introduces difficult questions about censorship, governance and responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intervention could potentially slow attackers, but it could also disrupt legitimate users and create new forms of centralized control inside protocols designed to operate without discretionary gatekeepers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For that reason, tracing, rapid identification of suspicious addresses and cooperation with platforms that actually control recoverable assets may remain some of the most practical tools available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bitget hack has therefore become more than a security incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become another test of how the crypto industry balances asset recovery with the principles of decentralization that many blockchain networks were built to protect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bitget is pushing to recover hundreds of millions of dollars stolen in a recent security breach, but the case is also raising a broader question for the crypto industry: when stolen assets move across decentralized networks, who should be responsible for stopping them?
