class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pattern has become especially clear after the $285 million Drift Protocol exploit and the $290 million KelpDAO attack, which together accounted for $575 million in significant, but the way attackers are stealing funds may be even more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data cited from CertiK and Forbes puts total crypto hack losses at approximately $1.3 billion during the first part of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TRM Labs arrived at a broadly similar conclusion, with DeFi-related losses alone approaching the $1 billion mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 30 individual exploits worth over $3 million have already been recorded during the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, many of the largest attacks were not caused by familiar vulnerabilities such as reentrancy bugs, flash-loan manipulation or broken oracle logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers increasingly focused on gaining legitimate access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social engineering, stolen session credentials, compromised validator keys and governance attacks have become major sources of losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a difficult challenge for DeFi security: a protocol can have technically sound smart contracts and still lose hundreds of millions of dollars if an attacker obtains the keys controlling them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drift Protocol Lost $285 Million in 128 Seconds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the clearest examples occurred on April 1, when Drift Protocol lost approximately $285 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The actual fund drain reportedly took only 128 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the preparation behind the attack lasted far longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers allegedly spent months posing as representatives of a quantitative trading firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They attended conferences, interacted with Drift contributors and gradually built relationships with people connected to the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than attacking Drift&#8217;s smart contracts directly, the attackers eventually obtained administrative authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once they had access, they were able to use legitimate protocol functions against the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attackers reportedly whitelisted a nearly worthless token called CVT and deposited approximately 500 million tokens as collateral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They paired the asset with an oracle they controlled and then withdrew roughly $285 million worth of USDC, SOL and ETH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exploit demonstrated how dangerous administrative privileges can become once the key controlling them is compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drift&#8217;s Audit Had Already Identified the Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most concerning details was that a previous security audit had identified the underlying mechanism involved in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2024 Neodyme audit noted that administrative instructions such as InitializeSpotMarket could accept an oracle account without proper validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the issue was classified as informational because only an administrator was expected to have permission to execute the function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That assumption ultimately became the weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The code itself did not necessarily need to be broken if attackers could simply obtain administrator-level authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the admin key was compromised, a previously low-priority finding became part of a nine-figure exploit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident highlights a broader problem with crypto security models that assume privileged keys will remain secure indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">KelpDAO Lost $290 Million 17 Days Later<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only 17 days after the Drift exploit, another major attack hit KelpDAO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 18, KelpDAO lost approximately $290 million through its LayerZero bridge infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack followed a different technical path but had a similar starting point: compromised credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the source material, an attacker socially engineered a LayerZero Labs developer and obtained session keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That access was then used to interfere with the RPC infrastructure feeding information into LayerZero&#8217;s verifier network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">External verification nodes were disrupted, while compromised infrastructure approved a forged cross-chain message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bridge subsequently minted approximately 116,500 unbacked rsETH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers then used the newly created assets as collateral on Aave to borrow real WETH before moving funds away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The damage spread beyond KelpDAO itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aave&#8217;s total value locked reportedly fell by $6.28 billion within 48 hours, while nine protocols temporarily froze markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arbitrum&#8217;s Security Council later used emergency powers to seize 30,766 ETH associated with the attacker, creating additional debate around decentralization and emergency intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drift and KelpDAO Shared the Same Fundamental Weakness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically, the two attacks were very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drift involved administrator access and social engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KelpDAO involved compromised session credentials and cross-chain verification infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But both incidents exposed the same fundamental security problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small number of trusted credentials had enough authority to affect enormous amounts of capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both projects had also undergone security audits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exploits therefore raise questions about whether traditional smart contract audits are examining enough of the actual attack surface surrounding modern DeFi protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lazarus Group Linked to $575 Million in Losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators connected both the Drift and KelpDAO attacks to TraderTraitor, a subgroup associated with North Korea&#8217;s Lazarus Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two incidents alone represent approximately $575 million in combined losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against the reported $1.3 billion in crypto hack losses for 2026, that means one threat actor may account for roughly 44% of the year&#8217;s stolen funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lazarus Group has a long history of attacks against cryptocurrency companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has previously been linked to major incidents involving Bybit, Radiant Capital, Ronin Bridge, WazirX and Harmony&#8217;s Horizon Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The significant change in 2026 appears to be the growing sophistication of its social-engineering campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than simply sending generic phishing emails, attackers can spend weeks or months building relationships with specific individuals inside cryptocurrency companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initial compromise therefore happens at the human level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only after trust or credentials have been obtained does the technical stage of the exploit begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Engineering Is Becoming a Core DeFi Threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional security discussions often focus heavily on vulnerabilities inside Solidity or Rust smart contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But attackers increasingly recognize that compromising someone with privileged access can be easier than discovering a complicated technical vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A protocol may spend months auditing thousands of lines of code while a single administrator, developer or validator still possesses credentials capable of approving critical transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changes the economics of an attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of trying to break cryptography or contract logic, an attacker can target the person controlling the key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Drift and KelpDAO incidents demonstrate why employee security and key management now need to be treated as part of protocol security rather than separate operational concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crypto Bridges Keep Breaking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross-chain bridges remain another major weakness in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their role is inherently difficult because a bridge must determine whether an event on one blockchain is legitimate before releasing or creating corresponding assets on another network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That process often relies on validators, signers, oracle nodes or verification services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If enough of those trusted parties are compromised, the bridge may approve fraudulent activity while technically operating exactly as designed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several 2026 exploits followed this pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KelpDAO lost approximately $290 million through a single-verifier compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFX Trade suffered a roughly $24.15 million exploit involving compromised validator signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VerusCoin&#8217;s bridge lost approximately $19.14 million across two separate incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, a Cosmos EVM underflow vulnerability affected MANTRA, TAC and KiiChain, producing combined losses of roughly $20.8 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AFX Trade Shows the Risk of Validator Concentration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFX Trade became another example of how concentrated bridge verification can create significant risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 22, five compromised validator signatures reportedly satisfied the two-thirds quorum required by the project&#8217;s Arbitrum bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers were then able to drain approximately $24.15 million in USDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funds were transferred to Ethereum, exchanged for around 12,467.5 ETH and consolidated into a single wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack happened only 49 days after AFX had highlighted a security audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That timing again demonstrates the limits of treating an audit as proof that a platform is secure against every possible attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">VerusCoin Was Exploited Twice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VerusCoin suffered two bridge exploits during 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first resulted in approximately $11.6 million in losses in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second exploit in July cost another $7.54 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, the attacks resulted in approximately $19.14 million in losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repeated exploitation of the same bridge reinforces concerns that security problems involving trust and verification infrastructure can remain dangerous even after an initial incident has exposed weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multi-Verifier Systems Could Reduce Bridge Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One solution already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of relying on one verification network, bridges can require multiple independent verification systems to confirm a cross-chain message before funds are released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a multi-verifier design significantly increases the difficulty of compromising the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An attacker would need to defeat multiple independent security systems rather than a single validator or verification layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, adoption remains limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to data cited in the source, approximately 47% of LayerZero OApp contracts \u2014 more than 1,200 applications \u2014 were still using single-verifier configurations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes the problem partly one of configuration rather than technological capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The security tools exist, but many projects are not using them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crypto Audits May Be Looking at the Wrong Attack Surface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The events of 2026 have also raised questions about the traditional security-audit model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smart contract audits are designed primarily to examine code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Auditors search for issues such as reentrancy, overflow vulnerabilities, incorrect access controls and contract logic access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KelpDAO incident involved infrastructure outside normal smart contract audit boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both cases, the contracts were only one part of a much larger security system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coldcard Hack Shows the Key Problem Goes Beyond DeFi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The compromised-key problem is not limited to decentralized finance protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 30, attackers began draining Bitcoin from wallets secured by Coldcard hardware devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the source material, a firmware problem caused a predictable software fallback to replace the expected hardware random-number generation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That reduced the randomness used to generate some wallet seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers could then generate possible seed combinations on their own computers, compare resulting addresses with public blockchain data and identify private keys associated with real wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack did not require phishing users or physically stealing hardware wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galaxy Research reportedly traced the initial wave to 1,082.65 BTC stolen from 1,196 addresses in only 41 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Aug. 7, the high-confidence estimate had reached approximately 1,596 BTC from around 7,300 addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broader estimates exceeded 2,055 BTC, worth roughly $130 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 15 independent attackers were believed to have exploited the same weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware Wallets Could Not Simply Be Patched<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coldcard manufacturer Coinkite issued an advisory after the problem emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a firmware update alone could not fix wallet seeds that had already been created using insufficient randomness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those seeds needed to be replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident demonstrated a deeper lesson about cryptocurrency security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private keys are only secure when the process used to create, store and authorize them is secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even users following standard self-custody practices can remain vulnerable if the underlying key-generation process is flawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Better Key Management Could Prevent Major Hacks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The security measures needed to reduce these attacks are not necessarily new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first major improvement involves key management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multi-party computation wallets and hardware security modules can distribute authority across multiple parties instead of placing everything behind one critical private key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Threshold signing can also require several independent approvals before sensitive actions are executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reduces the danger of a single compromised credential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timelocks Give Security Teams Time to Respond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important protection is the use of mandatory timelocks on privileged actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of allowing an administrator to instantly execute a high-risk transaction, the system can introduce a delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monitoring tools can then notify security teams that an unusual privileged action has been requested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Drift case, attackers drained the protocol in approximately 128 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sufficiently strong mandatory delay could potentially have created a window for intervention before funds left the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operational Security Needs More Attention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crypto companies also need stronger operational security programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Code audits cannot stop an employee from being manipulated into revealing credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projects handling hundreds of millions or billions of dollars therefore need security standards closer to those used by highly sensitive financial or infrastructure organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privileged accounts can use hardware-backed authentication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High-risk transactions can require multiple independent approvals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sensitive employees can receive dedicated social-engineering training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access can also be segmented so that compromising one developer or administrator does not automatically give an attacker control over critical protocol functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Governance Can Become an Attack Vector Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private keys and bridges are not the only concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governance systems can also become security weaknesses when participation is too low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Term Labs reportedly suffered an $8.5 million governance-related attack in August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near-zero voter participation allowed
