Ripple is pushing deeper into traditional finance with the launch of a new equities-focused business under Ripple Prime, but its best-known cryptocurrency, XRP, is surprisingly far from the center of the strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Aug. 27, Ripple Prime launched a Delta One desk aimed at hedge funds and institutional asset managers. The service gives clients synthetic exposure to U.S. equities, stock indices, Treasuries, and digital assets through instruments such as total return swaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That means institutional investors can gain exposure to assets such as Apple shares or the S&P 500 without directly owning the underlying securities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Ripple, the move represents another major step beyond its original identity as a crypto payments company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there is an interesting detail: XRP barely appears in the company’s announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, Ripple’s institutional infrastructure increasingly appears to revolve around prime brokerage services, financing, settlement, and its dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delta One desks are common within large investment banks and prime brokerages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their purpose is to provide financial products that closely track the performance of an underlying asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of Ripple Prime’s main products is the total return swap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through a total return swap, an investor receives the economic performance of an asset without actually taking ownership of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For example, a hedge fund could receive the gains, losses, and dividends associated with Apple stock while Ripple Prime handles the financing and underlying exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In return, the hedge fund typically pays a financing rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This structure can be particularly attractive to institutional investors that operate across different markets and jurisdictions because it can reduce some of the custody and settlement complications associated with directly owning securities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple Prime’s strategy extends far beyond cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The business is designed to provide institutional clients with access to equities, foreign exchange, fixed income, derivatives, and digital assets through a single counterparty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That gives Ripple an opportunity to generate revenue through financing spreads, clearing services, and institutional trading infrastructure rather than depending on cryptocurrency prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The new operation reportedly enters the market with more than $1 billion in regulatory net capital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple also strengthened its financing position in August by raising $275 million through senior unsecured notes and securing a $200 million debt facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These moves suggest Ripple is building the financial foundation required for a large institutional brokerage operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The more interesting part of Ripple’s institutional strategy may be its stablecoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n RLUSD has increasingly become integrated into Ripple’s financial infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unlike XRP, RLUSD is designed to maintain a stable value against the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That makes it more practical for collateral and institutional settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Total return swaps require margin to manage counterparty risk. Institutional firms generally prefer collateral that maintains predictable value and can settle quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stablecoins can potentially provide both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A volatile cryptocurrency such as XRP, however, creates additional market risk when used as collateral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That distinction could explain why RLUSD is becoming increasingly important across Ripple’s institutional products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n RLUSD’s growth has accelerated considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The stablecoin surpassed $2 billion in circulating supply<\/strong> during the final week of August, less than two an electronic payment instrument under the country’s Payment Services Act on June 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple also received preliminary MiCA authorization in Luxembourg on June 23, potentially supporting broader distribution across the European Economic Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n RLUSD has additionally expanded into Turkey through platforms including BiLira, Bitexen, and Bitlo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple introduced another important piece of its stablecoin infrastructure in July: Ripple Mint<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The platform allows eligible institutional customers to manage RLUSD issuance and redemption more directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For corporate treasury departments and financial institutions, this could make it easier to move between traditional dollars and blockchain-based dollars without depending entirely on manual processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Standard Custody and Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary, handles issuance under New York Department of Financial Services supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the source article, reserves are held in assets including bank deposits, U.S. Treasury bills, and money market funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The broader picture suggests RLUSD is becoming an reportedly the strongest weekly performance of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cumulative inflows across the seven funds reached approximately $1.66 billion<\/strong>, while combined assets under management climbed to around $1.44 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n August trading volume reached roughly $723 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Goldman Sachs also disclosed approximately $86.5 million in XRP ETF exposure in its second-quarter filing, according to the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This suggests investors continue to see XRP as an investable cryptocurrency even as Ripple builds businesses that do not necessarily require the token.<\/p>\n\n\n\n XRP also delivered a strong market performance during August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The token climbed from a yearly low near $0.99 on Aug. 15 to approximately $1.70 on Aug. 22 before later settling around $1.38.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That represented an approximately 37% monthly gain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the rally, XRP remained well below its previous cycle high of $3.65 cryptocurrency markets independently of Ripple’s direct revenue growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Understanding that distinction is becoming increasingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple Prime was not built from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its institutional expansion is the result of a multibillion-dollar acquisition strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most important deals was Ripple’s $1.25 billion acquisition of Hidden Road<\/strong> in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hidden Road already operated a large institutional prime brokerage business covering foreign exchange, derivatives, digital assets, swaps, and fixed income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the article, the company cleared more than $3 trillion annually for over 300 institutional customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple eventually rebranded the operation as Ripple lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rather than relying exclusively on cryptocurrency payments, Ripple is attempting to build a vertically integrated financial services platform connecting traditional markets with blockchain settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple Prime has also joined a tokenization initiative led by the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The program includes major financial institutions and companies working on tokenized equities, ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The initiative entered limited production in July 2026, with broader rollout expected in is designed to strengthen several existing features, including automated market makers, single-asset vaults, lending infrastructure, and pseudo-account handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does not introduce an entirely new financial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, it hardens infrastructure already being developed for production use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The XRP Ledger’s lending infrastructure could become particularly important for XRP’s long-term utility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lending protocol is designed to support fixed-term, uncollateralized loans using single-asset vaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Institutional borrowers could potentially obtain credit without the heavy overcollateralization requirements common across decentralized finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This could create demand for XRP if borrowers and lenders choose XRP-denominated vaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But there is an important alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They could use RLUSD instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If institutions continue preferring dollar-denominated stablecoins for accounting, collateral, and risk-management reasons, much of the economic activity could continue flowing through RLUSD rather than XRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For years, one of the strongest arguments supporting XRP was relatively straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n As Ripple gains institutional adoption, XRP should benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That relationship is becoming more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple has made significant progress across traditional finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It has expanded its institutional brokerage business, acquired major financial infrastructure companies, grown RLUSD, joined tokenization initiatives, and developed new settlement capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But many of those products generate revenue through fees, financing spreads, clearing, custody, and stablecoin activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not necessarily require customers to buy XRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This creates a growing gap between Ripple the company<\/strong> and XRP the cryptocurrency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of this means XRP has no value or cannot appreciate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Institutional interest remains visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ETF inflows have increased, trading activity remains significant, and investors continue gaining exposure to the asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n XRP also remains the native token of a blockchain experiencing increased institutional activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But investors may need to evaluate XRP differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead of assuming every Ripple partnership or institutional product automatically creates XRP demand, the more important question is whether the product actually requires XRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If activity settles through RLUSD, generates brokerage fees, or simply uses XRPL infrastructure without meaningful XRP demand, the impact on the token could be limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Several developments could provide clearer answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The potential Sept. 11 activation of XRPL’s lending-related maintenance upgrade could strengthen the network’s DeFi infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How borrowers and lenders choose between XRP and RLUSD will be important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple Prime’s future collateral announcements could also reveal whether RLUSD becomes formally integrated into Delta One margin requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The broader DTCC tokenization rollout expected in October will provide another test of Ripple’s institutional strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And XRP ETF flows will remain an important measure of whether professional investors continue increasing their exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ripple’s transformation is becoming difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The company is evolving from a crypto-focused payments business into a broader institutional financial infrastructure provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prime brokerage, equities, derivatives, treasury management, custody, stablecoins, and tokenized assets are becoming increasingly important parts of its strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That could be extremely significant for Ripple as a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For XRP holders, however, the key question is slightly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They need to determine how much of Ripple’s expanding financial ecosystem actually requires XRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Right now, RLUSD appears increasingly important for settlement and collateral, while XRP maintains a separate investment story driven
