Other cryptographic operations, including Sinsemilla hashing and zk-SNARK verification, also recorded major performance gains.

Importantly, developers can adopt the toolkit without requiring a Zcash hard fork or coordinated network upgrade.

Zakura Common Speeds Up Zcash Private Transactions

Zakura Common is designed to improve the way Zcash wallets construct shielded transactions and how full nodes verify them.

Shielded transactions are a key privacy feature of Zcash. They can hide the sender, recipient, and transaction amount while still proving that the transfer follows the network’s rules.

To achieve this, a user’s device must generate a zero-knowledge proof before the transaction is sent to the network.

This proof-generation process can be computationally demanding, especially on mobile devices.

Zakura’s benchmark results suggest that the new software dramatically reduces this workload.

Under some test conditions, private transaction construction fell from more than three seconds to below 200 milliseconds.

However, this figure represents a developer benchmark rather than a guaranteed real-world transaction time.

Actual performance can vary depending on device hardware, operating system, wallet software, and the complexity of the transaction.

Mobile Zcash Proof Generation Improves More Than 14x

One of the biggest improvements reported by Zakura involves proof generation on mobile devices.

According to its benchmark results, mobile proof generation became more than 14 times faster.

Desktop performance also improved significantly, with benchmark gains exceeding five times in some cases.

These improvements could make shielded transactions feel more responsive for users, particularly on smartphones where cryptographic calculations can take longer.

The faster construction process could also help reduce delays between initiating a private transaction and submitting it to the Zcash network.

However, it is important to distinguish between transaction construction and blockchain confirmation.

Zakura Common improves how quickly a wallet creates and prepares a private transaction.

It does not directly reduce the amount of time required for the Zcash blockchain to confirm that transaction.

Sinsemilla Hashing Becomes More Than 21x Faster

Proof generation is not the only area where Zakura reported performance gains.

The toolkit also improved Sinsemilla hashing by more than 21 times in benchmark testing.

Sinsemilla is used in Zcash’s shielded system for cryptographic commitments and related operations.

These calculations are an important part of building private transactions.

Making them faster can reduce the amount of computational work a wallet needs to complete before submitting a shielded transaction.

This could be particularly useful for lower-powered devices where cryptographic operations can otherwise create noticeable delays.

Zcash Wallet Scanning Also Gets Faster

Zakura Common also improves trial decryption.

Wallets use trial decryption when scanning blockchain data to determine whether particular shielded transactions belong to a user.

Zakura said this process improved by more than 1.5 times in its tests.

While that increase is smaller than the gains reported for proof generation and hashing, faster scanning could still improve the overall user experience.

Wallets need to regularly scan Zcash blockchain data to identify incoming private transactions and update balances.

Reducing the computational cost of that process could help wallets synchronize more efficiently.

zk-SNARK Verification Improves Up to 8x

Full nodes may also benefit from the new cryptography stack.

Zakura reported that zk-SNARK verification became between four and eight times faster.

Verification occurs after a private transaction reaches the network.

Nodes check the attached zero-knowledge proof to confirm that the transaction follows Zcash’s consensus rules without revealing the private information hidden inside it.

Faster verification can reduce the computational burden on nodes and may improve the efficiency of transaction processing.

Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe said both shielded wallets using Zakura Common and full nodes such as Zakura can benefit from the performance improvements.

Faster Verification Could Help Zcash Nodes

Improved verification performance could have benefits beyond individual transactions.

If nodes can check proofs more quickly, they may be able to process shielded transactions with less computational overhead.

Zakura has suggested that the improvements could support faster transaction propagation, quicker wallet synchronization, and potentially fewer orphaned blocks.

However, these broader benefits depend on how widely the software is adopted across Zcash wallets and node implementations.

A faster cryptography library does not automatically improve every part of the network unless developers integrate it into their applications.

Wallet Developers Can Adopt Zakura Common Without a Hard Fork

One of the most important aspects of Zakura Common is that it does not require changes to Zcash’s consensus rules.

Wallet and node developers can integrate the toolkit independently.

That means adoption does not require a hard fork, coordinated network upgrade, or activation threshold among node operators.

This could allow performance improvements to reach users more quickly than changes that require a full protocol upgrade.

Each developer will still need to complete its own integration, security review, and production testing before using Zakura Common.

The toolkit has been released under dual MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses, allowing developers to use, modify, and distribute the software.

Zakura 1.3.0 Already Uses the New Stack

The new cryptography toolkit has already begun appearing in production software.

Zakura version 1.3.0 uses Zakura Common.

Vizor Wallet has also been identified as one of the first confirmed wallet integrations.

Other Zcash users will receive the improvements only when their respective wallet providers adopt and release the new technology.

This means performance gains could appear gradually across the Zcash ecosystem rather than becoming available to every user at the same time.

Ironwood Upgrade Addressed a Different Zcash Problem

The Zakura Common release follows another major change to Zcash’s privacy infrastructure.

In July, the Ironwood upgrade replaced the affected Orchard pool following the discovery of a serious soundness vulnerability.

Ironwood was activated through the NU6.3 network upgrade at block height 3,428,143.

The previous Orchard pool was placed into an exit-only state.

Users could still withdraw their funds, but new shielded activity could no longer enter the affected pool.

Researchers warned that the original Orchard vulnerability could theoretically have allowed counterfeit ZEC to be created without immediate public detection.

The Ironwood design introduced additional supply controls aimed at limiting how much ZEC could leave the previous pool compared with the amount that had been deposited.

Ironwood and Zakura Common Solve Different Issues

Although both developments involve Zcash’s private transaction system, they address very different problems.

Ironwood was a network-level security upgrade.

It changed the shielded infrastructure itself and required a coordinated protocol update.

Zakura Common, on the other hand, focuses on software performance.

It improves how wallets construct, scan, and verify private transactions without changing the underlying Zcash consensus rules.

This distinction is important because the new toolkit is primarily an efficiency upgrade rather than a direct response to the Orchard vulnerability.

Zcash Wallet Development Becomes More Decentralized

Zcash wallet development has also become more distributed across several independent teams.

Former Electric Coin Company developers created a separate organization earlier this year following disagreements related to governance, funding, and operational independence.

The group continued developing the existing Zashi codebase, initially under the name CashZ.

The wallet was later renamed Zodl after the team formed the Zcash Open Development Lab.

Existing recovery phrases, balances, and transaction histories remained unchanged during the transition.

The project later raised more than $25 million from investors including Paradigm, a16z crypto, and Winklevoss Capital.

More Platforms Add Shielded Zcash Support

Access to private Zcash transactions is also expanding beyond dedicated wallets.

ShapeShift added support for shielded Zcash transactions to its non-custodial platform after receiving funding from Zcash Community Grants.

Developments like this could increase access to Zcash’s privacy features while new infrastructure such as Zakura Common attempts to improve usability.

For privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, usability has often been a major challenge.

If private transactions become faster and easier to process, they may become more practical for everyday users and wallet developers.

ZEC Price Briefly Rises After Zakura Release

ZEC initially gained around 5% and traded near $839 following the Zakura announcement.

However, the timing alone does not prove that the software release caused the price increase.

By Aug. 31, ZEC was trading around $829.

The cryptocurrency had moved between approximately $808 and $888 over the previous 24 hours.

As with most cryptocurrency price movements, several factors can influence short-term trading activity, including broader market sentiment, liquidity, technical positioning, and investor expectations.

The performance improvements may attract attention, but they do not guarantee higher ZEC prices.

Faster Transactions Do Not Mean Faster Zcash Blocks

The below-200ms benchmark should not be confused with Zcash’s block confirmation time.

Zakura Common speeds up local transaction construction and cryptographic processing.

It does not reduce Zcash’s block production interval.

That issue is being considered separately through the proposed NU7 network upgrade.

NU7 could potentially reduce Zcash block times to around 25 seconds.

However, that proposal would still need to pass through its own governance process and network activation before the shorter block interval becomes available.

Zakura has said its software can operate under the proposed faster block timing if NU7 is eventually activated.

Zcash Privacy Could Become Much More Usable

Zakura Common could address one of the biggest practical challenges facing privacy-focused cryptocurrency transactions: performance.

Reducing proof construction from several seconds to below 200 milliseconds in some benchmark tests could make shielded Zcash transactions feel much faster, particularly on mobile devices.

At the same time, improvements to Sinsemilla hashing, trial decryption, and zk-SNARK verification could benefit wallets and full nodes across the ecosystem.

The biggest advantage may be that these improvements can be introduced without waiting for another network-wide upgrade.

Wallet developers can adopt the software independently, allowing users to benefit as integrations become available.

Still, the benchmark results should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every Zcash private transaction will complete in under 200 milliseconds.

Real-world performance will depend on hardware, wallet implementation, transaction complexity, and network conditions.

If adoption expands, however, Zakura Common could significantly reduce the computational friction involved in using Zcash’s privacy features.

<p
