Hyperliquid and Pump.fun together accounted for nearly 90% of the tracked repurchases, showing that token buybacks are far from being adopted evenly across the crypto market.

The trend highlights a growing effort by crypto protocols to connect platform revenue with their native tokens, although buybacks do not automatically translate into higher prices.

Crypto Token Buybacks Reach $638 Million

Crypto projects spent approximately $638 million repurchasing their native tokens during the first eight months of 2026.

That compares with around $545 million during the corresponding period in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 17%.

The growth becomes even more striking when compared with 2024.

Projects included in the dataset spent only about $366,000 on token repurchases throughout 2024.

The jump from hundreds of thousands of dollars to hundreds of millions shows how quickly revenue-funded token buybacks have become a major part of some decentralized finance projects’ economic models.

Still, the headline figure requires some context.

Hyperliquid and Pump.fun accounted for nearly 90% of the total recorded during 2026.

As a result, the increase does not necessarily indicate that the entire crypto industry is rapidly embracing buybacks. Instead, much of the growth comes from a few protocols generating substantial revenue and directing part of it toward their tokens.

Annual and Cumulative Buybacks Are Different

It is also important to distinguish between annual buyback spending and the total value of tokens a project has repurchased over its lifetime.

The $638 million figure represents purchases made during 2026 across multiple projects.

Hyperliquid, for example, has reportedly repurchased and cancelled approximately $1.3 billion worth of HYPE since launching in late 2024.

That $1.3 billion is a cumulative figure covering a much longer period.

It should therefore not be added to the $638 million 2026 total, since doing so would mix two different measurement periods.

Hyperliquid Leads Crypto Token Buybacks

Hyperliquid operates the largest revenue-funded token repurchase program included in the data.

The decentralized derivatives platform directs 99% of eligible trading fees toward its Assistance Fund.

Those funds are then used to automatically purchase HYPE tokens as part of Hyperliquid’s layer-1 operations.

The acquired tokens are subsequently burned, meaning they are permanently removed from circulation.

This structure directly connects activity on the Hyperliquid platform with recurring market demand for HYPE.

As trading activity generates fees, most eligible revenue feeds into the repurchase mechanism.

Hyperliquid Has Bought Around $1.3 Billion in HYPE

Since launching its buyback system, Hyperliquid has reportedly purchased and cancelled approximately $1.3 billion worth of HYPE.

Again, that amount represents cumulative spending since December 2024 rather than the amount purchased during 2026 alone.

HYPE traded around $63.35 on Aug. 31 and had gained approximately 70% over the previous year, according to figures cited by the Financial Times.

The buyback mechanism may have contributed to recurring demand for the token, but it cannot be viewed as the only reason for HYPE’s performance.

Trading volume, platform adoption, user activity, market conditions, and investor sentiment can all influence token prices.

An earlier analysis of Hyperliquid’s system found that the Assistance Fund had accumulated roughly 28.5 million HYPE by May.

At the revenue levels observed at the time, its annualized buyback rate was estimated at around 7% of the token’s market capitalization.

Pump.fun Becomes the Second Major Buyback Driver

Pump.fun is another major contributor to the record crypto token buyback total.

The token launch platform uses revenue generated from its launchpad, PumpSwap exchange, and other trading products to repurchase PUMP tokens.

Under its current system, 50% of designated revenue is allocated to token buybacks and burns through a locked smart contract.

During the week ending Aug. 9, Pump.fun reportedly spent approximately $5.02 million buying and burning 2.15 billion PUMP.

By that point, its cumulative repurchase program had reportedly offset an estimated 15.7% of the token’s original supply.

The program creates recurring buying pressure while permanently removing purchased tokens from circulation.

However, PUMP’s tokenomics contain another important factor: scheduled unlocks.

PUMP Buybacks Compete With Token Unlocks

Pump.fun’s buybacks have taken place alongside distributions of previously locked tokens.

In July, the project distributed approximately $86.49 million worth of vested PUMP to 121 wallets associated with team members and investors.

These two mechanisms affect token supply in opposite ways.

Buybacks and burns remove tokens from the available supply.

Unlocks, meanwhile, make tokens that were previously restricted available for transfer.

This means a large repurchase program does not automatically result in a declining effective supply if significant token unlocks are occurring at the same time.

PUMP traded around $0.0015 on Aug. 31.

Its performance demonstrates why token buybacks should not be viewed as guaranteed price support.

Revenue growth, investor demand, market sentiment, token releases, and broader crypto conditions can outweigh the impact of a repurchase program.

Sky Protocol Spends $26 Million on Buybacks

Sky Protocol also participates in token repurchases, although its approach differs from Hyperliquid and Pump.fun.

According to Allium Labs’ 2026 data, Sky spent approximately $26 million purchasing SKY tokens during the year.

Its overall cumulative spending is significantly higher because the project’s Smart Burn Engine was already operating before 2026.

Sky describes the Smart Burn Engine as an on-chain mechanism that uses surplus protocol revenue to purchase SKY from the open market.

The structure connects the protocol’s financial performance with demand for its native token.

Governance adjusted the system in March, reducing the pace of buybacks by lowering individual purchase sizes and increasing the amount of time between transactions.

Sky Uses Market Purchases for Staking Rewards

Sky’s token model also uses open-market purchases to support staking rewards.

Rather than creating new tokens to finance those rewards, the protocol says tokens are purchased from the market.

This approach allows the ecosystem to connect protocol surplus with token demand without increasing SKY’s maximum supply through additional issuance.

It is a different economic model from protocols that continuously issue new tokens as staking incentives.

However, the amount of buying still depends on protocol revenue and governance decisions.

If those conditions change, the pace of purchases can also change.

Lido Proposes a More Conditional Buyback System

Lido has considered another approach through its proposed NEST framework.

Unlike systems that continuously direct a fixed percentage of fees toward token purchases, Lido’s proposed mechanism would activate only after certain financial conditions are met.

Under the framework, buybacks would begin when annualized protocol revenue exceeds $40 million.

The original proposal also required Ethereum to trade above $3,000, although later governance discussions considered removing that separate ETH price requirement.

If activated, the framework would direct 50% of staking revenue generated above the $40 million baseline toward LDO purchases.

The structure also includes spending limits.

Daily purchases would be capped at $50,000, while total buybacks would be limited to $10 million over a rolling 12-month period.

These figures represent governance parameters rather than guaranteed future purchases.

If protocol revenue fails to reach the required threshold or governance changes the system, actual spending could be lower.

Token Buybacks Don’t Guarantee Higher Prices

The rapid growth of crypto token buybacks has encouraged comparisons with share repurchases in traditional financial markets.

There are similarities, but the two should not be treated as identical.

A token buyback creates a recurring source of demand because the protocol enters the market and purchases its own token.

If the purchased tokens are permanently burned, the transaction can also reduce circulating supply.

In theory, stronger demand combined with lower supply can support a token’s market value.

But crypto tokens do not necessarily provide the same rights as corporate shares.

Owning a governance token generally does not automatically give the holder ownership of the protocol, rights to dividends, or a legal claim over its underlying assets.

As a result, traditional stock-buyback logic cannot always be applied directly to crypto.

How Tokens Are Handled After Buybacks Matters

The impact of a buyback also depends on what happens after the tokens are purchased.

Tokens that are permanently burned cannot return to circulation.

That creates a clearer long-term reduction in supply.

Tokens moved into a project treasury are different.

Unless they are permanently locked, those assets could eventually be distributed, used for incentives, sold, or otherwise returned to circulation.

Investors therefore need to examine the structure of each program instead of focusing only on the headline amount spent.

Governance also plays a major role.

Many decentralized protocols can modify, reduce, suspend, or completely discontinue their buyback programs through future governance decisions.

A repurchase policy operating today is not necessarily a permanent commitment.

Revenue Is Critical to Sustainable Crypto Buybacks

One of the most important questions surrounding crypto buybacks is whether they are supported by sustainable protocol revenue.

Hyperliquid’s model is closely connected to trading fees.

Pump.fun similarly relies on revenue generated through its token launch and trading ecosystem.

Sky uses protocol surplus, while Lido’s proposed framework would activate only once revenue passes a specific threshold.

These designs attempt to connect repurchases with real economic activity rather than funding purchases primarily through new token issuance.

That distinction matters.

A buyback program backed by consistent revenue may be more sustainable than one that depends on reserves that can eventually run out.

However, even revenue-funded programs can slow if trading volumes, fees, or other sources of income decline.

Crypto Buybacks Become a Bigger Part of Tokenomics

The record $638 million spent on crypto token buybacks in 2026 shows how quickly repurchase mechanisms have developed into an important part of token economics.

Hyperliquid and Pump.fun are currently driving most of that activity, while projects such as Sky and Lido are experimenting with different approaches tied to surplus revenue, staking income, or specific financial thresholds.

The trend could give successful protocols another way to return economic value to their token ecosystems.

However, investors should avoid assuming that every buyback will lead to higher token prices.

Token unlocks, new issuance, market demand, protocol revenue, investor confidence, broader market conditions, and whether purchased tokens are actually burned can all influence the final outcome.

For that reason, the size of a buyback program is only one part of the picture. The more important question is whether the underlying protocol can continue generating enough real revenue to support those purchases over the long term.

Crypto projects have spent approximately $638 million buying back their own tokens in 2026, marking a new record as revenue-funded repurchase programs become increasingly common across the digital asset industry.
