Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has helped investigators identify more than 7,700 suspected accounts connected to cryptocurrency activity involving child sexual abuse material (CSAM), as part of a large international effort known as Operation Lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The operation brought together law enforcement agencies, cryptocurrency companies, payment providers, and specialist nonprofit organizations to investigate financial activity linked to more than 100 suspected CSAM platforms, forums, and distribution networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Chainalysis, investigators analyzed 29,120 cryptocurrency addresses and other digital identifiers, ultimately generating approximately 14,300 investigative leads. Suspected individuals connected to the activity were identified across 125 countries, highlighting the international scale of the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Operation Lighthouse was conducted at the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) in New York. Rather than functioning as a traditional training exercise, the multi-day initiative focused on active investigative targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Months of preparation and data enrichment took place before the investigative sprint began. This allowed participating organizations to work with existing intelligence associated with suspected CSAM buyers, sellers, platform operators, and administrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators combined blockchain transaction records with information available to exchanges, payment companies, nonprofit organizations, and law enforcement agencies. This approach helped transform cryptocurrency addresses and transaction histories into investigative leads that authorities could potentially connect to identifiable individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The resulting intelligence was shared with 11 cryptocurrency exchanges and payment services for additional investigation and possible legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most significant outcomes of Operation Lighthouse was the identification of more than 7,700 suspected accounts across cryptocurrency exchanges and payment platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chainalysis reported that 16 of those accounts were associated with registered sex offenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The investigation also identified suspects across 125 countries, demonstrating how digital payment networks can enable criminal activity to cross national borders while also giving investigators financial trails that may be analyzed internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Organizations participating in the operation included major crypto companies such as Binance, Coinbase, and Block. Law enforcement participants included the Australian Federal Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the UK’s National Crime Agency, and Europol. The Internet Watch Foundation also contributed specialist knowledge related to online child exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although cryptocurrency represents only a portion of financial activity associated with CSAM, Chainalysis says its use in this area has increased in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, public blockchains can provide investigators with transaction histories that are difficult to erase. Once a suspicious cryptocurrency address is identified, blockchain analysis can help investigators follow transactions between wallets and determine whether funds eventually interact with identifiable services such as centralized exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When legal and compliance requirements are satisfied, participating exchanges can compare relevant blockchain activity with their internal account information. This can potentially turn an anonymous-looking wallet address into an actionable investigative lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The process becomes more complicated when offenders move cryptocurrency through several intermediary wallets, privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, or services with limited customer identification requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Previous Chainalysis research found that Bitcoin had historically been widely used among identified CSAM-related services, while some operators have increasingly turned to privacy-focused cryptocurrencies such as Monero in an attempt to conceal financial activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Private-sector cryptocurrency companies played an important role in Operation Lighthouse by combining blockchain intelligence with information available through their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Binance Senior Program Manager for Anti-Child Sexual Exploitation Gavin Sather emphasized the importance of cooperation between public authorities and private companies, particularly when online abuse overlaps with illicit financial activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Binance has also increased its broader investment in financial-crime prevention. According to previously reported company figures, the exchange spends around $300 million annually on compliance and employs nearly 1,500 people in compliance-related positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exchange also reported supporting hundreds of thousands of law-enforcement requests globally and intercepting billions of dollars in suspected fraud, scams, and unusual financial activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coinbase similarly highlighted blockchain transparency as an important investigative advantage, arguing that transaction data can help companies and authorities identify and disrupt abusive activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The operation comes as cryptocurrency companies face increasing pressure to strengthen transaction monitoring and anti-money laundering systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Separate Chainalysis research found that 47% of cryptocurrency businesses entering the market in 2026 already used alerting standards that would have ranked among the strictest 10% of monitoring settings observed in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, investigators still face challenges when illicit funds travel through multiple intermediary wallets before reaching an exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some cryptocurrency platforms may apply different monitoring thresholds to indirect exposure, potentially making suspicious activity more difficult to identify when funds have passed through several addresses or services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For investigations involving CSAM-related financial activity, this distinction is particularly important because offenders may deliberately move funds through multiple wallets before interacting with centralized platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cryptocurrency’s role in payments associated with child exploitation has previously attracted attention from lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In April 2024, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bill Cassidy asked the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security for information about their ability to identify cryptocurrency transactions associated with CSAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lawmakers questioned whether federal agencies had sufficient technical capabilities and investigative tools to identify buyers and sellers using cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their concerns included the growing use of privacy-focused cryptocurrencies and mixing services designed to make transaction trails more difficult to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chainalysis has also previously reported increased cryptocurrency activity connected with other forms of exploitation. Research published earlier in 2026 found that cryptocurrency flows linked to suspected human trafficking services increased significantly during 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Operation Lighthouse demonstrates how blockchain investigations increasingly depend on cooperation between multiple industries and jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Europol representatives noted that offenders can use financial services, social media, payment systems, and other internet platforms to facilitate online child sexual abuse. Because these activities often span multiple services and countries, coordinated investigations are increasingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Internet Watch Foundation contributed intelligence and specialist expertise to help participants identify and disrupt criminal distribution networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Representatives from Block and the NCFTA also emphasized that collaboration between law enforcement, technology companies, financial platforms, and nonprofit organizations can help investigators identify suspicious financial activity even when illegal material itself is not stored on a financial platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chainalysis said the information generated during Operation Lighthouse will continue moving through investigative channels. Authorities and participating companies are expected to examine individual accounts, pursue additional leads, disrupt suspected networks, and determine whether the evidence can support arrests or prosecutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While blockchain technology can be used to transfer funds internationally, Operation Lighthouse also demonstrates one of its major investigative characteristics: transactions recorded on public blockchains can leave lasting financial trails. When those records are combined with exchange data and international law-enforcement cooperation, investigators may be able to turn seemingly anonymous cryptocurrency payments into actionable intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
