Coinbase has suffered a legal setback in Michigan after a federal judge refused to temporarily block state officials from enforcing sports betting laws against the company’s prediction market contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
U.S. District Judge Shalina Kumar denied Coinbase Financial Markets’ request for preliminary relief on Aug. 6, leaving Michigan free to continue enforcing its sports betting rules while the broader lawsuit moves forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ruling does not end Coinbase’s case. However, it represents another important development in the growing legal fight over whether federally regulated prediction markets should fall under exclusive federal oversight or remain subject to state gambling laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coinbase Financial Markets sued Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel as part of its effort to prevent state authorities from restricting sports-related event contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company argued that the contracts are governed by the federal Commodity Exchange Act and regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Coinbase, that federal framework should prevent individual states from applying their own gambling and sports betting restrictions to the same products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Judge Kumar was not persuaded that Coinbase had shown a strong enough likelihood of succeeding on that argument to justify a preliminary injunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result, Michigan’s existing enforcement authority remains in place for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coinbase’s prediction market offering is connected to contracts supplied through Kalshi, a federally regulated prediction market platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
