Telegram has made one of the biggest moves in crypto this year by taking direct control of The Open Network, better known as TON.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On May 4, 2026, Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced that the company would replace the TON Foundation as the main driver of the blockchain and become its largest validator. The decision marks a dramatic reversal from 2020, when Telegram was forced to step away from its original blockchain project after a major U.S. SEC enforcement action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now, six years later, Telegram is returning to TON with a much stronger position, a massive user base, and a clearer plan to turn the network into a consumer-scale crypto platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The original Telegram Open Network was shut down in 2020 after the SEC said Telegram\u2019s Gram token sale violated securities laws. Telegram eventually agreed to return $1.22 billion to investors and pay an $18.5 million penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After that, independent developers kept the project alive under the TON Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Telegram\u2019s validator takeover is the third step in the roadmap. The remaining steps are expected to include improved developer tools, a redesigned TON website, TON Pay 2.0 for in-app payments, and TON Teleport, a Bitcoin bridge designed to bring BTC liquidity into the TON ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The market reacted quickly to Telegram\u2019s return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Toncoin rose from around $1.30 on May 4 to about $1.80 within 24 hours. Over the following week, the token climbed above $2.15 as traders responded to Telegram\u2019s renewed commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rally was also supported by nearly $192 million in single-day staking inflows and millions of dollars in short liquidations as bearish traders were caught off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The price action showed that investors viewed Telegram\u2019s direct involvement as a major structural upgrade for TON.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The timing of the takeover is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2020, the regulatory environment made it almost impossible for Telegram to launch and control its own blockchain. By 2026, the situation has changed. U.S. crypto policy has become more supportive, several crypto ETFs have been approved, and lawmakers are working on clearer rules for digital assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, Telegram has more than 950 million users, giving TON one of the largest possible distribution channels in crypto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By taking control now, Telegram can move faster on payments, Mini Apps, developer tools, and consumer crypto products while competitors are still trying to build mainstream adoption from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Telegram\u2019s takeover also raises serious concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TON is now more centralized than before because one major company is becoming the network\u2019s largest validator and main decision-maker. That could improve execution speed, but it also increases governance and regulatory risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The biggest concern is that TON is now more directly tied to Telegram and Pavel Durov. Durov still faces legal scrutiny in France, and any major development in that case could affect investor confidence in TON.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This means TON holders are not only betting on blockchain adoption. They are also betting on Telegram\u2019s ability to execute while managing regulatory and legal challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most important question is whether Telegram can use TON to bring crypto to everyday users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most crypto projects struggle because users need wallets, gas tokens, exchanges, bridges, and technical knowledge. Telegram already has the audience, the app, and the social layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
