He compared the current environment to past crypto winters in <strong>2018 and 2022<\/strong>, periods defined by long stretches of exhaustion, fading optimism, and weak price response to good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not a correction a real crypto winter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hougan, the decline was driven by familiar forces. Excessive leverage built up during the previous bull run eventually unwound, while long-term holders took profits near the top. Once that selling pressure began, sentiment steadily deteriorated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes this cycle harder to recognize, he explained, is that <strong>institutional buying absorbed much of the selling<\/strong>. Spot Bitcoin ETFs, corporate treasuries, and other large buyers quietly stepped in, preventing prices from collapsing outright but not enough to reverse the broader downtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hougan noted that positive developments normally expected to lift prices, such as growing institutional adoption, improving regulation, and broader crypto use cases, have failed to spark sustained rallies. In his view, this is a classic feature of deep bear markets, where \u201cgood news simply doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Institutional demand hid the weakness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report highlighted that ETFs and digital asset treasuries collectively bought <strong>more than 744,000 Bitcoin<\/strong> during this period. That level of demand, Hougan said, helped cushion the market and may have prevented Bitcoin from falling <strong>as much as 60%<\/strong> from its highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, despite that support, overall sentiment has continued to slide. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index remains stuck in extreme fear territory, reinforcing the idea that confidence is deeply shaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History suggests timing matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hougan pointed to historical patterns showing that crypto winters typically last around <strong>13 months<\/strong>. Bitcoin peaked in December 2017 and bottomed a year later. A similar pattern played out after the October 2021 peak, with prices finding a low in late 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on that history, Hougan believes the market may now be approaching the <strong>late stages<\/strong> of the current winter a phase marked by fatigue, skepticism, and widespread disengagement rather than panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What could spark a recovery?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While his outlook is cautious, Hougan did outline several factors that could eventually shift the market:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Stronger global economic growth that revives risk appetite<br>\u2022 Progress on U.S. crypto regulation, including the CLARITY Act<br>\u2022 Early signs of sovereign or state-level Bitcoin adoption<br>\u2022 Or simply time allowing excess leverage and speculation to fully reset<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized that recoveries rarely begin when sentiment feels optimistic.
