Thailand Securities and Exchange Commission is moving to finalize regulations that could allow crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to launch in the country as early as 2026, marking a significant step in Thailand\u2019s evolving digital asset strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to comments reported by local media, SEC deputy secretary-general Jomkwan Kongsakul confirmed that crypto ETFs have already received approval in principle. The regulator is now working on detailed investment and operational guidelines that would formally enable these products to enter the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thai regulators see crypto ETFs as a safer and more accessible way for investors to gain exposure to digital assets. By using traditional fund structures, ETFs remove many of the risks associated with direct crypto ownership, such as wallet security, private key management, and hacking concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Kongsakul emphasized that a successful rollout will require close coordination between licensed digital asset exchanges and asset management firms. Ensuring sufficient liquidity will also be critical. To address this, the SEC is considering the use of market makers, including exchanges, financial institutions, or corporations that already hold cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond ETFs, Thailand is also preparing to expand crypto exposure through regulated derivatives. The SEC plans to enable crypto futures trading on the Thailand Futures Exchange by recognizing digital assets as an official underlying asset class under the country\u2019s Derivatives Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the regulator\u2019s proposed framework, crypto would be treated as \u201canother asset class,\u201d allowing investors to allocate up to 5% of a diversified portfolio to digital assets. This approach aims to balance innovation with risk management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, the SEC is working with the Bank of Thailand to launch a regulatory sandbox focused on tokenized assets. The initial phase will prioritize bond tokens, with issuers encouraged to test products under regulatory supervision. Crypto exchange KuCoin has already been selected as the first platform to participate in a government-supported bond token initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thailand\u2019s broader pro-crypto stance has been taking shape over the past year. The Ministry of Finance introduced a five-year capital gains tax exemption on crypto transactions to position the country as a regional digital asset hub. Regulators have also consulted publicly on updated listing rules for licensed exchanges, even as crypto payments remain restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later in the year, Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira highlighted cryptocurrencies as a key component in modernizing Thailand\u2019s financial infrastructure, particularly within the tourism sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
