Several leading DeFi teams have announced plans to lock down or abandon public Discord servers, arguing that the platform\u2019s open structure makes it nearly impossible to protect users from phishing attempts and fake support messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Morpho, a major DeFi lending protocol, said its public Discord server will switch to read-only mode starting Feb. 1, 2026. The team plans to redirect users to a dedicated help page and a ticket-based support system, replacing open chat rooms with controlled communication channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Morpho, the change is designed to deliver safer and more reliable support while reducing exposure to impersonation scams that frequently target users asking for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paul Frambot, Morpho\u2019s co-founder and chief executive, said Discord had become \u201cmore negative than positive\u201d for user support, citing constant noise and repeated scam attempts despite active moderation. Fellow co-founder Merlin Egalite added that the platform\u2019s structure makes it difficult to fully prevent direct-message phishing, even when verification tools and restrictions are enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Morpho said it has been testing alternatives such as Intercom-style systems, which offer ticketing, automated responses, and instant translation while limiting unsolicited messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DefiLlama has also reduced its reliance on Discord, shifting much of its user support to live chat and email-based ticketing. The platform\u2019s pseudonymous founder, known as 0xngmi, said Discord makes it \u201cimpossible to protect users from getting scammed,\u201d even with stricter moderation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DefiLlama now uses a hybrid approach, keeping Discord accessible behind additional verification while encouraging most users to seek support through alternative channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marc Zeller, founder of the Aavechan Initiative, described Discord as \u201cfull of scammers\u201d and said Morpho\u2019s move should prompt other major protocols to reassess their dependence on the platform. Duncan Cock Foster, co-founder of Nifty Gateway, echoed the sentiment, calling Discord moderation one of the most exhausting aspects of running a crypto business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shift away from Discord has sparked debate across the DeFi community. Supporters of open servers argue that Discord has played a key role in peer-to-peer collaboration, real-time development discussions, and community building. Critics counter that user safety must take priority, especially as scams continue to evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some developers maintain that features such as disabling direct messages, enforcing stronger verification, and integrating on-chain identity tools can reduce scam activity. Others argue these measures are insufficient given how easily attackers adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Security concerns escalated further after an October incident involving a third-party support system used by Discord. The company confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed a vendor account linked to Zendesk, exposing sensitive data related to age-verification appeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cybersecurity researchers claimed that more than two million passport and driver\u2019s license images were accessed during the breach, raising broader questions about data handling and privacy risks tied to centralized support platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As scams and impersonation attacks continue to rise, DeFi protocols are facing a critical decision: preserve open community spaces at the cost of higher risk, or migrate to closed, ticket-based systems that prioritize security over spontaneity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
